Map: 5.1 earthquake near Mono Lake followed by flurry of aftershocks
A 5.1-magnitude quake rocked an area near the Nevada-California line that has experienced a recent surge of seismic activity.
The quake, at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, was followed in the next 15 minutes by seven aftershocks from 2.5 to 4.3, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was in the ghost town of Candelaria, Nevada — 15 miles south of Mina and about 50 miles east of California’s Mono Lake. It was within 15 miles of the epicenters of a 5.3 quake on Nov. 13 and a 6.5 quake on May 15 (indicated by orange dots on the map above).
The May quake was Nevada’s largest since 1954 and was felt in the Reno-Tahoe area and as far away as the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys in California.
Responses to the USGS Did You Feel It? website indicated Tuesday’s quake was felt in Reno, 130 miles to the northwest, as well as in Yosemite National Park and Bishop, Calif.
It was the largest quake in the conterminous United States since the Nov. 13 quake near the same place.
