Former SF Giants third base coach Tim Flannery battling staph infection in hospital
Former San Francisco Giants third base coach Tim Flannery has been fighting a staph infection in a San Diego hospital for the last nine days, but his family said in a statement that the coach-turned-musician is improving.
“Tim was admitted to a hospital in San Diego on Sunday, October 18th where he is being treated for a staph infection,” the Flannery family said. “He is responding well to antibiotics and even requested his guitar be brought to him.”
Flannery’s band, Tim Flannery and the Lunatic Fringe, is posting nightly updates to their Facebook page detailing his recovery process and the treatment he’s receiving.
“Good news today out of Flan camp…Blood cultures showed no new growth and the primary staph infection is responding to the antibiotics,” a post from Monday said. “His doctors are working on making sure they’ve got everything identified so we can get him on the road to recovery which we know will be long but necessary with these types of infections.”
Flannery was the third base coach under Bruce Bochy when the Giants won World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The 63-year-old retired after the 2014 season and has spent the last several years touring with his band and serving as a part-time analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area on Giants pre and postgame shows.
Flannery last appeared on the Bay Area radio airwaves on September 10 to discuss the end of Pablo Sandoval’s career as a Giant. The former third base coach was a fan favorite for the energy he brought to the coach’s box and his reputation for racing with base runners down the line toward home plate.
