Lakers, Dodgers fans may be helping drive uptick in L.A. virus cases
The successes of the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers are bringing fans together in the L.A. area, and that might be helping drive an uptick in coronavirus cases, Los Angeles County’s top health official said Monday.
The Lakers won the NBA championship two weeks ago, and the Dodgers are one victory from winning the World Series. Their playoff run has prompted watch parties and celebrations.
Los Angeles County is the nation’s largest, with 10 million residents, and cases there increased this month from an average of 940 per day to nearly 1,200 last week, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said.
She praised fans’ spirit, but “the downside of this is that during a pandemic some of the things we’ve done in the past just don’t make sense.”
Health officials have warned of a second wave of virus cases, and Ferrer said L.A. County’s increase wasn’t immediately apparent because of a backlog of cases because of technical issues with data-collection systems.

NASCAR race is
delayed yet again
The NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Texas was pushed back another day without any more laps completed.
Eight hours after the race was scheduled to resume on a misty day with temperatures in the low 40s, NASCAR postponed it and decided to try again Tuesday.
Similar conditions were forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Only 52 of the scheduled 334 laps were completed Sunday before mist and drizzle forced the race to stop. There was a delay of more than four hours before the race was postponed.
Another 115 laps have to be completed to get to the halfway mark of 167 laps that would make Texas an official race.
