Campbell community briefs for the week of Oct. 30
CERT fundraiser
Campbell’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) needs to raise money after losing all its funding for this year and next due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 200-member team, made up of local volunteers, is usually funded through the city and its annual Taste of Campbell event. CERT uses the funds to purchase supplies for large-scale emergencies and to provide free first-aid and emergency preparedness classes, as well as free first-aid services for local community events. The nonprofit also uses social media campaigns to build awareness for disaster preparedness.
To raise money for its 2021 activities, Campbell CERT has started a GoFundMe campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-campbell-cert
Second Harvest needs volunteers
Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is issuing an urgent call for volunteers to help distribute food to the half million people now receiving food assistance from the nonprofit every month.
The number of people served by Second Harvest has doubled during the pandemic and includes many who have never received food assistance before. In response, Second Harvest and its partner agencies have continued to open new public food distribution sites throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, including 130 new drive-through sites. Second Harvest needs more volunteers at these sites, many of which have been operating with only half of the needed workforce.
Individuals and groups can volunteer to hand out food at distribution sites located throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties or to sort and box food at Second Harvest’s Cypress warehouse, 4001 N. First St., San Jose. To sign up for shifts, visit https://www.shfb.org/give-help/volunteer.
