Meghan Markle for U.S. president? Friend says she ‘would seriously consider' it
The duchess of Sussex may have her eye on the White House.
Meghan Markle’s representatives have repeatedly denied that Prince Harry’s wife is interested in running for office, but a close friend says that isn’t the case, and says the duchess has taken pains to keep that path open.
“One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics,” the unnamed friend said, according to Vanity Fair . “I think if Meghan and Harry ever gave up their titles she would seriously consider running for president.”
Markle and Prince Harry earned the ire of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue this week when they released a video stressing the importance of voting in the November election. The video, which coincided with Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2020, strayed from the neutral stance the royal family insists upon.
“Every four years, we’re told the same thing, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is,” Meghan said in the video. “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”
Prince Harry got in on the action; flipping his normal tendency to avoid politics, he backed up his wife. “As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity,” he said in the video, which has been viewed as a tacit endorsement of Trump’s Democratic opponent in November, Joe Biden.
Buckingham Palace quickly moved to distance itself from Hary’s remarks, saying they were made in a “personal capacity.”
Although the royals did not mention him by name, Trump was quick to fire back at the duchess — but not Harry — when asked about the video on Wednesday. “I’m not a fan of hers,” he said. “And I would say this — and she probably has heard that — but I wish a lot of luck to Harry because he’s going need it.”
Despite the friend’s revelations to Vanity Fair, however, others close to Markle feel her future ambitions may focus more on political activism rather than high office.
“While there’s no denying she is interested and engaged in politics as a topic, she harbours no ambition to enter a career in politics herself,” one source said.
