For the first time since the 1990s, this rivalry isn’t in Jacksonville. EverBank Stadium is under renovation, so the game moves to Atlanta this year and Tampa next year before heading back to Jacksonville in 2028. Florida is the designated road team, and with the game a short drive from Athens, it’s going to feel that way. You can bet the DAWGS will be out in full force Saturday afternoon.
Georgia is 6-1, and the one loss still stings. Auburn upset the Bulldogs in Athens two weeks ago, and Gunner Stockton had the worst game of his tenure as the starter: two interceptions for the first time and a late fumble that set up Auburn’s game-winning field goal. Kirby Smart’s teams don’t usually let that kind of performance sit, and Georgia had a full off week to stew on it.
The Bulldogs’ offense has been better than the reputation suggests. Georgia dropped 41 on solid Oklahoma defense and 45 at Arkansas, and it’s gone over the total in six of seven games, the most in the SEC. The concern is the backfield. Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens have both missed multiple games, and Georgia’s run game hasn’t looked the same without Frazier’s physicality. Check his status before you bet, because that's a major factor on Saturday.
The Gators might be back. Jon Sumrall took over a 4-8 team and has the Gators at 5-2 and ranked in his first season. Florida has already beaten Ole Miss 52-28 and won at Texas, and the offense runs through the ground game with one of the best backs and best running back tandems in all of college football. Jadan Baugh ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns against Ole Miss, and Duke Clark gives Florida a second back who can carry the load. Florida has run the ball 286 times to 214 passes this year. Gator quarterback Aaron Philo has been efficient when asked to throw, and helps open things up for the vaunted run game.
The problem is the other side of the ball. Florida is allowing 34.2 points per game in SEC play and has given up 38 or more in two of its last three games. By the advanced numbers, the Gators rank 118th in EPA per play and 110th against the pass. That’s a bad matchup against a quarterback looking to clean up a bad game, especially when that game is taking place in Atlanta.
Georgia has won five straight in this series, every one by at least 14 points. Smart has lost to Florida just twice since taking over in 2016. Florida hasn’t been a top-25 team with this kind of offense in most of those years, though, and that’s the question bettors have to answer.
