Aaron Sorkin reveals why Trump is unmentioned in 'Social Reckoning' movie
Writer-director Aaron Sorkin explained why President Donald Trump’s name is omitted from his upcoming film examining Facebook’s influence on political discourse, including in the lead-up to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
When asked by Politico why Trump is not mentioned, Sorkin said he believed the president’s inclusion would become an unwelcome "distraction," adding that it was his decision to keep his name out of the film and that he wanted "clean hands."
"I felt like as soon as we got to that scene, as soon as you saw anything ‘Trump,’ it would just become about something else," Sorkin told the outlet. "Again, I realize it’s going to kind of become about that ‘something else’ anyway. But I just like to have clean hands."
"The Social Reckoning," set to premiere in theaters Oct. 9, 2026, is a companion piece to Sorkin’s 2010 film "The Social Network," which chronicled the rise of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The new movie follows whistleblower Frances Haugen, who provided internal Facebook documents to The Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, which became the basis for the outlet's "Facebook Files" series examining the company's internal research and practices.
The documents, published as part of a 2021 investigative series for the Journal, included internal research and findings about political polarization and the effects of Instagram on some young users' mental health.
Sorkin acknowledged that the film is "political" but argued that it is "not a red-blue thing."

He said he wasn't directed to remove Trump's name from the movie but instead kept him out of it to keep Facebook at the center of the discussion.
"I’m not going to deny, of course, that the movie is political. I just think it shouldn’t be. There’s really no reason for it to be," the screenwriter said.
"I delivered the script and I think the next day I was in Tom Rothman’s office, and unsolicited, I told him that in that sequence we wouldn’t see any Trump signage at all. We won’t even see red hats. We’re going to see "Don’t Tread on Me," "Stop the Steal." You see American flags, Confederate flags, but it won’t be about MAGA versus everybody else, or even red-blue. It’s just going to be about Facebook’s role in the rise of divisiveness, extremism, and hyperpartisanship. So it was my choice. "
A spokesperson for Meta said in 2022 that the platform was not responsible for violence on Jan. 6, instead pointing to Trump and others who promoted false claims that the 2020 election had been stolen.

The film arrives as technology companies face continued scrutiny over social media’s harmful effects and as artificial intelligence draws attention in Washington.
Social media’s influence has grown considerably in the 16 years since "The Social Network" was released and "The Social Reckoning" returns to Facebook to examine allegations about the platform’s role in amplifying political division and extremist content.
Sorkin said he had considered revisiting Facebook whenever the company was in the news, but the story involving Haugen and Horwitz finally felt like a solid basis for a film.
"The fact that the film has coincided with what tech people would call an inflection point is just happenstance," he said as his movie arrives to a more tech-skeptical audience in 2026.

"The Social Reckoning" is set to be released Oct. 9, roughly one month before the 2026 midterm elections. Sorkin told Politico that the upcoming elections played a part in deciding when the film would be released.
"I don’t think this movie can change the course of electoral history," the filmmaker explained. "But these midterms are why I didn’t want to wait a year to make the movie. I didn’t want the movie to come out after the midterms because I didn’t think we’d be in the mood for it anymore."
"And yeah, I thought maybe one little reminder might be helpful," he added.
An insider close to the White House panned the movie as "delusional fiction."
"Trump-deranged Democrats like Sorkin live in a political bubble that pathetically now encapsulates their art," they told Fox News Digital. "Judging by the trailers released, this delusional fiction looks so bad, it may even have the opposite effect of what was intended. What a loser!"
