ESPN deserves credit for pushing back on Dan Le Batard’s false accusation of racism
ESPN published a statement in response to former employee Dan Le Batard accusing the network of harboring a pro-White racial bias.
"[Le Batard's accusation] is simply an inaccurate and irresponsible characterization of ESPN, our talent and our talent leadership," the network said in a statement to Awful Announcing. "ESPN has the deepest and most diverse roster of commentators in the industry, bringing a wide range of expertise, experiences and perspectives to our coverage. We are proud of the team we have built and will continue investing in new voices."
For background, Le Batard claimed last week that ESPN "only" pays and elevates White on-air commentators. He cited recent contract extensions for Joe Buck, Pat McAfee, Josh Pate, Rich Eisen, the Golics, Jason Kelce and Peter Schrager.

Last week, OutKick documented several examples contradicting Le Batard’s accusation. We asked him for comment and highlighted the hypocrisy of his criticism. Le Batard runs his own media company, Meadowlark Media, which employs a staff made up almost entirely of White men.
He did not respond to our inquiry.
To advance his argument, Le Batard disregarded the substantial evidence that contradicts it. He listed the White commentators ESPN has paid and elevated while omitting the many Black talents who have received lucrative contracts and significant promotions in recent years.
That list includes Stephen A. Smith, Michael Wilbon, Malika Andrews, Monica McNutt, Marcus Spears, Jason McCourty, Kendrick Perkins and many others.
In fact, viewers are far more likely to encounter an all-Black cast of commentators on ESPN — including in the network’s WNBA studio programming — than the reverse.
It appears Le Batard is less concerned with racial balance than he is with the fact that ESPN no longer excludes White people from its promotion process, as it once did.
Between 2020 and 2023, talent agents acknowledged that White clients, particularly White men, were effectively ineligible for promotion because of diversity initiatives.

It is unusual for a media network to respond publicly to criticism of this nature. ESPN nevertheless deserves credit for directly addressing Le Batard’s accusations.
For too long, the targets of baseless racism accusations have allowed them to go unanswered. That silence has enabled grifting racial ideologues like Le Batard to make such claims with increasing regularity.
He likely did not expect ESPN to respond by exposing the weakness of his argument.
That said, one must question whether Le Batard’s strategy will ultimately succeed. ESPN management is, if nothing else, reactionary. Nothing appears to frighten the network more than accusations of racism, even when they are unfounded, as they almost always are.
Consider, for example, ESPN executive Burke Magnus re-hiring Stan Verrett, despite all his unprofessional tweets, seemingly in response to Ryan Clark blaming racism for why Magnus fired him. (Note: Racism was not why Magnus fired Clark.)
We would not be surprised if Magnus responds to Le Batard’s similarly dishonest accusations by overpaying and over-elevating random Black talents.
Perhaps he will look to bring back Mark Jones or Jemele Hill as further evidence that he is willing to rehire people whose primary contribution is racial grievance. We would not doubt it.
Magnus wants to prove he is not a racist (even though he clearly isn't one).
But if he had a backbone, he would continue moving ESPN toward a meritocratic system and let hypocrites like Le Batard preach about diversity while running a media company staffed almost exclusively with white men.
