Democrats punish members who put working Americans ahead of party loyalty

Democrats in Washington have committed the party’s newest unforgivable offense: representing the American people. Democratic Reps. Jared Golden, of Maine, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, of Washington, broke with their party Sept. 1 to advance a procedural rule allowing the House to consider Golden’s Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act and a resolution condemning socialism. The rule passed 210–208, with five Republicans opposed, making their votes decisive.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other Democratic leaders accused them of blindsiding the caucus, called their decision a "significant breach of trust" requiring a "serious response," and asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to review the matter. Think about the political message Democrats sent: Helping Maine lobstermen fight burdensome regulations and allowing Congress to vote on a resolution condemning socialism are now acts of political blasphemy inside the Democratic Party.

Democrats will insist their outrage is about House procedure and not lobstermen. That distinction doesn’t matter to most Americans who expect their representatives to protect their livelihoods. Golden co-sponsored legislation to protect Maine’s half-billion-dollar lobster industry, which supports thousands of workers and coastal communities.

JEFFRIES THREATENS 'SERIOUS RESPONSE' AFTER DEMOCRATS HELP GOP ADVANCE ANTI-SOCIALISM VOTE

Gluesenkamp Perez represents a southwest Washington district where families also depend on fishing and natural-resource industries. Both chose workers over mandates they believed were impractical. Golden captured the absurdity: "Could you imagine going home to your constituents and being like, ‘I was trying to help you, but I had to vote no’?" That is precisely what Democratic leaders demanded, put the party before the people who elected you.

The timing of this vote and the Democratic Party’s reaction are politically dangerous because most Americans consider themselves working class. A recent Pew Research Center analysis found that 60% of adults say "working class" describes them extremely or very well, up from 54% in 2024. That includes half of college graduates and half of upper-income Americans, while the figure rises to 77% among blue-collar workers.

FRUSTRATED BLUE-COLLAR UNION BOSSES RIP SOCIALIST POLITICIANS, WARN OF LABOR EXODUS FROM DEM PARTY

This identity cuts across income, race and education, making it one of the broadest political constituencies in America. These voters may not follow House procedure, but they understand the lives of fishermen, farmers, tradesmen and small-business owners. These are everyday Americans who Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez defended. By treating their defense of working people as betrayal, Democratic leaders directly exposed a party that places partisan loyalty and ideology ahead of the working class.

That reaction is particularly risky because Democrats hold a fragile advantage on the cost of living, which is the leading midterm issue. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that voters prefer Democrats over Republicans by 36% to 28% on handling this issue. However, 37% chose neither party or remained unsure, suggesting Democrats are benefiting from frustration rather than confidence in their economic plan. By punishing members who defended workers, Democrats are giving Republicans an opportunity to define them in four words: Democrats are against you.

DEMOCRATS ARE IN BIG TROUBLE BECAUSE BLACK AND BROWN VOTERS DON’T WANT SOCIALISM

That opening grows even wider when Democrats are forced to defend their economic ideology.

The House passed a resolution condemning socialism, but 192 Democrats voted against it while only eight joined Republicans in support.

The House passed a resolution condemning socialism, but 192 Democrats voted against it while only eight joined Republicans in support. Democrats argue that the measure also included Republican election-security provisions. Four Democrats even proposed condemning socialism in a separate amendment stripped of those provisions, but it never received a vote.

That may explain the objections of those four Democrats, but it does not explain the other 188. Democrats want voters to trust their economic agenda while refusing to draw a clear line between their policies and socialism. Worse, members who defend workers or challenge the party’s progressive direction now face punishment. Democrats may campaign as the party of working people, but their policies favor greater government control.

Republicans must make the consequences of that agenda tangible for every American family. America prospers when people are free to work, build, fail, recover and pursue the American Dream without government permission. Greater government control brings higher taxes, heavier regulations and rising costs, ultimately leaving workers, families and small businesses with less money, less freedom and fewer opportunities. Democratic leaders have revealed their priorities: The party comes first and working Americans come last. In November, working Americans will have the final word.
