America’s quiet socialist takeover is spreading from town halls to classrooms
The socialist experiment in America is no longer confined to Washington or deep-blue national politics. It is coming to city halls and school boards across the country, where low-turnout elections can transform ambitious ideology into binding budgets and classroom policy.
Local government often affects Americans’ everyday lives more directly than Washington, shaping taxes, municipal services, schools, policing and housing. Americans should therefore pay close attention to the DSA’s steady advance into local government, where ideological commitments can collide with fiscal limits, practical administration and community preferences.
On affordability, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s municipal grocery plan illustrates how a policy marketed as relief for working families can shift costs and risks onto others. New York City has allocated $70 million toward five municipal grocery stores that will be operated by private firms under city requirements while selling a defined basket of essential goods at prices the city says will be 30% below typical retail prices. That "basket of goods" applies to selected produce, meat, seafood, pantry staples and other goods — not necessarily every product in the stores.

The Multicultural Business Coalition, which says it represents hundreds of small, immigrant- and minority-owned grocers, has filed two lawsuits. The group wants to stop the plan, arguing that independent grocers operating on narrow margins cannot fairly compete against taxpayer-supported stores. The litigation has not established that businesses will close, and the first municipal store is not expected to open until next year. Nevertheless, the dispute exposes a recurring flaw in government-centered economic policy. Making goods cheaper for one group can impose costs on another, including on family-owned businesses, their employees and taxpayers.
A policy intended to protect the working class should not proceed without serious analysis of whether it could displace the middle-class entrepreneurs who have served these neighborhoods for decades.

Local school boards present another opportunity for ideological politics because their decisions shape not only district budgets, but also what children are taught and which perspectives are treated as legitimate. When curriculum becomes a vehicle for political activism, academic achievement and intellectual diversity can become secondary.
The concern is not that schools should ignore controversial subjects or disadvantaged students. It is that consequential policies can be adopted without adequately examining educational evidence, fiscal tradeoffs, dissenting perspectives, or the preferences of local families. Because school-board elections frequently receive limited public attention, organized political groups can exercise influence disproportionate to their support in the broader community.
Los Angeles offers a prominent example. DSA-LA helped elect Karla Griego and Rocío Rivas to the Los Angeles Unified School District board and openly describes them as its "Socialists in Office." Its education agenda extends beyond conventional school policy to climate activism, immigration, LGBTQ+ protections, housing and labor policy, opposition to law enforcement and anti-privatization efforts.
Such politicization risks infringing on parental rights while losing sight of education’s fundamental responsibilities — ensuring students can read, handle basic arithmetic, think critically and acquire the skills necessary to navigate adulthood.
SOCIALISM MOVES INTO THE MAINSTREAM — THE WARNING SIGNS ARE ALL HERE
Nor are these candidacies confined to Los Angeles. "DSA-LA has endorsed and campaigned for Estefany Castañeda, Rivas and Griego, all of whom won seats on Southern California education boards; San Diego DSA backed Erin Evans; Greater Baltimore DSA supports Baltimore school-board member Ashley ‘Ash’ Esposito; and in the 2026 election, Twin Cities DSA is supporting candidate Christin Crabtree in Minneapolis." The national organization has also encouraged chapters to recruit and run school-board candidates. Taken together, these campaigns show a deliberate effort to extend democratic-socialist influence into education governance.
That makes transparency essential. School-board candidates should disclose organizational relationships, distinguish local educational needs from national political objectives and explain how proposed policies will improve measurable student outcomes. Policymakers should likewise demand curriculum transparency, clear academic objectives and credible evidence that new expenditures will improve outcomes such as literacy, followed by public reporting on whether those improvements materialize.
America’s civic character will not be transformed only in Congress or the White House. It can change one municipal budget, ordinance, labor agreement and curriculum decision at a time.

Democratic socialists have the same right as anyone else to participate in debates over inequality, housing, public services and education. But no movement’s moral certainty should exempt its proposals from fiscal arithmetic, educational evidence, viewpoint diversity, or community consent.
The spread of DSA influence into local government is an effort to translate a national ideology into everyday governance, where the consequences become intensely personal. Spending commitments can raise taxes and crowd out essential services. Housing mandates can reshape neighborhoods. Public-safety experiments can affect whether residents feel secure. And ideological school policies can determine what children learn.
If this movement continues advancing through low-turnout elections and lightly scrutinized offices, Americans may discover their communities have been fundamentally changed only after the financial obligations and institutional policies have become difficult — and extraordinarily expensive — to reverse.
