LSU might have to sue the SEC if this legal war is expedited, while Dabo Swinney is staying in his 'Lane'
If you wanted fireworks before the Week 1 college football schedule begins Thursday night, look no further than Baton Rouge.
The NCAA, SEC, LSU and other conference schools (by way of plaintiffs) are set for a courtroom showdown Thursday morning, with the future of several players who have NFL ties hanging in the balance.
Over the past week, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has made it clear that he plans to follow the court order issued by a Louisiana judge in the ongoing fight over whether players can return to college football after pursuing professional careers.

With the support of Gov. Jeff Landry and LSU athletic department officials, Kiffin appears ready to create a major stir if the plaintiffs, a few of which are LSU bound, are granted an injunction allowing them to play this weekend.
That part is easy to understand.
The bigger question is whether LSU is prepared to challenge rules enacted by its own conference. That decision will involve more than Kiffin, even though the LSU coach has been the most vocal figure in the legal fight.
"There's no intent nor there ever was to play somebody that we're not supposed to over an SEC rule," Kiffin said. "I'm not the spokesperson. I think now you're waiting to see Thursday.
"The SEC had a stance, made a rule. The judge felt that they couldn't do that to the players. We'll be practicing, focused on Clemson and spending our time on that all week. They can figure out the rest, and we'll just wait for guidance."
And don't forget that the SEC is currently prohibited from punishing LSU if it was to roster a player that is protected by a standing court order, which also includes the NCAA. This could lead to further protection if a Louisiana judge grants the plaintiffs an injunction on Thursday.
LSU is not the only SEC program affected by Thursday’s hearing.
South Carolina recently signed Appalachian State transfer Ethan Johnson, who entered the NFL Draft process hoping to reach the professional level. After going undrafted, Johnson decided to return for another season of college football.
To make that happen, he needed a judge to grant him an additional year of eligibility.
Johnson hired an attorney and is now part of the legal battle in Louisiana. The plaintiffs will face the NCAA and SEC in court Thursday morning.
Unlike some of the other players involved, Johnson did not participate in an NFL training camp. However, he is still fighting for the right to play under the "five-for-five" argument at the center of the broader eligibility dispute.
For now, Johnson and South Carolina are waiting to learn whether he will be eligible to play Saturday.
The situation also puts the SEC in a difficult position. If Kiffin plays multiple athletes who are prohibited under the conference’s newly enacted guidelines, will the league punish LSU?
But with the situation continuing to brew around the SEC, with the conference scheduled to be inside the Baton Rouge courthouse on Thursday morning, the conversation shifts to whether they will act if Lane Kiffin legally trots out multiple players that would be violating newly engacted guidelines.
"This is an absolute mess that could be avoided, and part of me thinks they (LSU) are doing this for the attention leading up to their game against Clemson," one SEC athletic director mentioned to OutKick. "Right now, it's them against the world. But, are they willing to test their own conference? Are they prepared to sue the SEC if they are punished for breaking our rules?
"You talk about a mess, I couldn’t imagine our schools being caught up in this right now with everything else going on in college athletics. But, he's (Kiffin) clearly selling tickets to the show, even if half of the attention heading into the weekend will center around a few guys who couldn’t make an NFL roster.
"To each their own, but I'll be fascinated to see how that fan base reacts if they catch a loss early in the season with this lawsuit mess hovering over their heads."
After naming Christopher Vizzina that starting quarterback this week ahead of its showdown with LSU on Saturday night, it's clear that the Clemson head coach is not trying to tip his hand more than he has to.
Lost in the ongoing madness around what transpires on Thursday in Baton Rouge is the narrative surrounding Dabo Swinney's future at Clemson.
Concerns about Clemson falling behind in the changing college football landscape have reached a fever pitch heading into the 2026 season.
Many Tigers fans are wondering whether the program can return to the national prominence it enjoyed during Swinney’s best years.

"In my mind, we still don't have any starters," Swinney noted. "Now, we're gonna run some guys out there Saturday (@ LSU). And then we'll start to make some decisions, because we'll have some performance."
While this might freak out Clemson fans, it does feel as though Dabo is purposely planting the seeds to create some type of madness inside LSU's 'Death Valley'.
As for the ongoing discussion around NFL players returning to college for another season through the legal process, Swinney didn’t hesitate to offer his blunt assessment.
"I mean, honestly, it's just embarrassing that that's where we are. I don't blame the kids. People trying to take advantage of the system," Swinney told reporters. "I think it's just embarrassing where we are in college football. And we've been there for a while, so I just keep my energy, keep my focus on the things that I control and the things that matter with these kids here and our team."
Swinney has never been shy about sharing his opinion, whether he is criticizing Ole Miss over alleged tampering involving one of his former players or weighing in on the eligibility lawsuits spreading across the country.

"No pun intended, but we’re just going to stay in our 'lane,'" Swinney said.

Now, Clemson will have to hope Swinney has enough "starters" ready for the battle waiting in primetime Saturday night.
