A combination of bad coaching hires and subpar quarterback play is the culprit for SEC's recent swoon
It has been a hotly debated topic in college football circles as to whether the SEC's reign of dominance has ended after a nearly 20-year run, and while I'm not here to bury the league just yet, it's hard to argue they've taken a step back.
From 2006 to 2023, an SEC team won a staggering 13 of a possible 17 national championships during the era of both the BCS and College Football Playoff.
However, the once-dominant Southeastern Conference hasn't won a championship in three years despite adding two traditional powers to its ranks (Oklahoma and Texas) and hasn't even reached the title game since Georgia won it all in January 2023.
Many people like to point to the advents of NIL and the transfer portal as the boogie men responsible for the SEC's downfall, but to me, it's a far more nuanced conversation than just saying "paying players is legal now, therefore the SEC sucks."
While there may not be a single issue that is easily identifiable, I can think of two reasons as to why the SEC has experienced its recent CFP swoon.
First, and perhaps most importantly, the coaching hires at several top-flight SEC programs have left much to be desired.
Some coaching changes were flat out downgrades from their predecessors while others, while not necessarily poor coaches in their own right, were terrible fits and never should have been considered in the first place.
Let's start with the two tentpole programs of the conference since the league went to a championship game format, Alabama and Florida.
Since the SEC expanded to 12 teams in 1992 and implemented the SEC Championship Game, both the Tide and Gators are first and second in league titles, with 11 and seven, respectively.
When the conference was in its early stages of ascending to dominance in the late 2000s, two of the greatest coaches of their era called Tuscaloosa and Gainesville home.
Nick Saban won six national championships while coaching the Crimson Tide, but when he called it quits in 2024, Alabama needed to find someone to fill his shoes.
Enter Kalen DeBoer.

Now, DeBoer isn't a bad coach, per se, but he isn't Saban, and Bama has failed to live up to its legendary status from the decade prior since he arrived.
For the Gators, it's been way worse since Urban Meyer left.
A program like Florida, with all its resources and in-state talent available, should never bottom out like it did in 2025, but the crazy thing is they've experienced three separate four-win seasons since the legendary coach Meyer walked out the door in 2010.
A run of subpar coaching hires culminated in the Billy Napier tenure, who was, by every metric, the worst coach in Gator football history since World War II.
His arrival coincided with the steady decline of the SEC starting with the 2023 season, and although Florida wasn't a perennial contender from 2010-2022 before hiring Napier, his destruction of the program has left a void where a once-proud national power used to be.
For another SEC powerhouse in LSU, it's a bit more complex.
If we are talking purely from an X's and O's standpoint, I believe Brian Kelly is a better coach than former Tigers head man Ed Orgeron, so I understood and even joined in the optimism for the Bayou Bengals when they hired the former to replace the latter in November 2021.

Coach O had won a national title while in Baton Rouge, so surely Kelly could do the same, right?
There are two main differences separating Kelly and Orgeron that made one more successful than the other: willingness to delegate and culture fit.
The culture fit piece is perhaps more nebulous but equally important, and while Orgeron fit LSU like a glove, Kelly stuck out like a sore thumb.
Kelly's inability or unwillingness to accept the "LSU way" doomed him from day one, and it's a big reason he was ousted as unceremoniously as he was while Coach O has been welcomed back with open arms.
What Orgeron lacked in game-day coaching acumen he more than made up for in recognizing talent and delegating, both on the field and with his coaches.
Having Dave Aranda and Joe Brady (along with Steve Ensminger) orchestrating the Tigers' defense and offense, respectively, led to the record-breaking 2019 season that saw quarterback Joe Burrow win a Heisman and guide LSU to a historic national championship.
Speaking of Burrow, let's transition to the other half of the equation regarding the SEC's steady decline.
Talent has started to equalize at the top, particularly between the SEC and Big Ten, and when talent is equal, coaching and quarterback play act as the tiebreaker.
We touched on coaching, but what about quarterback play?
There's no question that when the SEC was ripping off their run of national championships that the quarterbacks were outrageously talented.
Players like Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Tua Tagovailoa, the aforementioned Burrow, and even a guy like Mac Jones were all Heisman winners or finalists who elevated the play of the team around them and ultimately captured college football's biggest prize.
Since the Big Ten started their own run of dominance in the sport, the balance of power under center has shifted heavily away from the SEC.
Even during Georgia's run of back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, the Dawgs had a player like Stetson Bennett, a Heisman finalist in his own right whose stats were otherworldly despite his relative obscurity and circuitous path to becoming a starting QB.
It's not like the SEC has missed out on talented signal-callers, but it seems like all the best quarterbacks are playing for the lower-level teams in the league that have no shot at winning the title.
Hopefully for the league's sake, that changes this year with players like Arch Manning and Trinidad Chambliss leading Playoff-caliber teams near the top of the league, but it seems like whenever the league gets a quarterback that is capable of winning a championship, he ends up on either a flawed team like Jayden Daniels with LSU in 2023 or a team that just isn't talented enough like Diego Pavia on last year's Vanderbilt team.
Sometimes, transcendent quarterback play can even lift a mediocre coach to glory, as we saw with Cam Newton at Auburn in 2010.
With all due respect to Gene Chizik, he had no business winning a national championship, especially with that 2010 Auburn team, but Newton's superhero performance that season elevated them to a dream ending.
Obviously, there are way more factors that go into the shift of the balance of power in college football, and these theories are neither exhaustive nor foolproof, but they're a good start and way more in depth and nuanced than just pointing at NIL and the transfer portal.
The SEC still has the talent for a team from its ranks to win it all, and there are still plenty of great coaches and quarterbacks within the Southeastern Conference to perhaps break the drought in 2026.
Coaches like Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin, and Steve Sarkisian have the chops to make a run this season and will have great teams with talented, veteran quarterbacks to boot.
Whether they put it all together or cede to the Big Ten once again remains to be seen, but I think I speak for everyone when I say I can't wait to see how it all plays out.
