DSA co-chair mocked for proudly confirming socialists want to abolish the Senate, national borders, prisons

The national co-chair for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) was mocked by conservatives on Sunday after she proudly confirmed many of the DSA's policy ideas, including abolishing the Senate, eliminating prisons and getting rid of national borders, among others.

Speaking to Fox News' Shannon Bream, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) national co-chair Megan Romer fired off a series of "yes" and "true" responses when asked whether the organization's platform calls for dismantling major American institutions.

"[You're advocating for] abolish[ing] the Senate?" Bream asked.

"True," Romer responded.

Romer also affirmed the organization's support for replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, abolishing ICE, eventually eliminating national borders while granting amnesty to people living in the country illegally, defunding the Pentagon, phasing out prisons and shifting most large corporations to public ownership.

She said some proposals, including abolishing borders and prisons, are part of the organization's long-term vision.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wrote, "These people are insane."

GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a post of the exchange on Fox News, "Read their platform: Abolish the Senate, the Presidency, the Supreme Court and immigration enforcement. Open the border wide. Grant mass amnesty. Defund the Pentagon. The barbarians are inside the gate—and Democrats are WELCOMING them in! Communism is no longer a far-fetched threat. It is here on our SHORES! This isn’t just Common Sense vs. Crazy anymore. It’s Common Sense vs. COMMUNISM."

Actress Patricia Heaton wrote, "Yikes."

DSA MEMBER LEADS DEM PRIMARY IN MIDWEST BATTLEGROUND BUT TRAILS LIKELY GOP NOMINEE: POLL

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., wrote, "The DSA isn’t just gaining influence in New York or California. Bernie Sanders- and Mamdani-backed candidates are winning races across the country. Watch this clip closely. These ideas could be coming to your community sooner than you think."

Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, said in response, "Love that today’s Marxist[s] are so ‘in your face’ honest. This proves the ole saying… ignorance is Bliss."

Tom Tiffany, a Republican running for governor in Wisconsin, said the remarks from Romer sounded like democratic socialist Francesca Hong, who is running in the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary.

"This sounds a lot like DSA-backed @FrancescaHongWI. Does she want to abolish the police? Yep. Does she want to abolish prisons? Absolutely. Did she call for abolishing the U.S. Senate? Yes. Socialism is knocking on Wisconsin’s door. This November, we slam it shut," Tiffany wrote.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Hong rejected Tiffany's accusations.

"Tom Tiffany is once again telling lies and inventing quotes, because he can't run on his record. Rep. Hong has never called for abolishing the U.S. Senate. Tiffany cannot produce a single statement where she did, because it doesn't exist. She has spoken about police and prison abolition in the past as an aspirational goal, but it is not her current position, and it's not something she will pursue as governor. She does not support replacing the presidency with the Supreme Court. Eliminating national borders isn't her position either, and it's not even part of the official DSA platform. DSA is a membership organization, not a political party. Rep. Hong is not endorsed by DSA national, and doesn't agree with everything in its national program," Hong communications director Allison Geyer told Fox News Digital.

Hong's campaign website lists the Milwaukee, Northeast Wisconsin and Madison DSA chapters on her endorsement page.

Hong previously appeared on far-left streamer Hasan Piker's show and distanced herself from the streamer during an MS NOW interview in early July.

"I condemn hatred, discrimination, antisemitism and Islamophobia, any sort of dehumanizing of communities," Hong said during the interview. "Being on these streams, it’s important that we get our message out in places where, you know, campaigns struggle to reach voters. Just because I am on a platform certainly does not mean that I endorse everything that has been said by either the hosts or other people who have gone on."

Joe Mitchell, a Republican running for Congress in Iowa, accused Lindsay James, a Democrat running for the same seat, of standing for the same policy positions.

".@Lindsay4Iowa stands for all of this," he wrote.

"No, Lindsay does not support any of these out of touch, ridiculous, policies. Lobbyist Joe Mitchell is lying about Lindsay again because Joe knows his record of enriching himself at Iowans' expense is disqualifying," Jackson Smith, a spokesperson for James' campaign, told Fox News Digital when reached for comment.

The Virginia GOP also demanded all Democrats be asked if they support the policies put forth by the DSA.

"This is what Virginia Democrats think belongs under their 'big tent.' Every Democrat should be asked to explicitly denounce these insane anti-American positions & the DSA. If they refuse to do so, we know where they stand," they wrote on X.

GOP Tennessee Rep. Chuck Fleischmann wrote in response to Romer's statements, "The DSA is a complete inversion of what America stands for; you can watch it for yourself. Their movement is a coordinated effort to undermine our nation’s values and dismantle the freedoms we hold dear. If we don’t stand up, speak out, and defend our country’s core values, we could soon find ourselves watching the America we love slip away."

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman also called out Romer's comments on X.

He wrote, "This isn’t a big tent—it’s anarchy. Why can’t Dems call out the DSA?"

"This is insane. How can anyone vote for a @DemSocialists member unless you are an anarchist?" Bill Ackman asked on X.

Ackman has been outspoken about New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's democratic socialist vision for the Big Apple.

He called his policies a "disaster" for the city, and said he wasn't a fan of the mayor.

The DSA did not immediately return Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Socialist platforms and campaigns are on the rise across the country, including in New York, where two House candidates backed by Mamdani defeated incumbent progressive lawmakers and will likely sail to victory in the November general election.

A third open House race saw a Mamdani-backed candidate defeat an establishment-backed Democrat.
