Topanga Lawrence stuns as a housewife in 'Sandlot' TV reboot, female flag football player gets pummeled & NFL!

'Nightcaps' is a daily column that catches you up on the biggest sports, news and culture stories you may have missed while pretending to do work at your desk. It runs Monday–Friday on OutKick.com.

Here we go! Final Monday of July. Final week of July. Come Saturday, we'll have turned the page to a new month. A big month. The real "calm before the storm."

All 32 NFL teams report this week. College football media days wrap up with that pesky Big Ten conference, and then the boys hit the practice fields. We've got the MLB Trade Deadline in a few days. There's a lesbian cheating scandal currently rocking the WNBA.

And they say this is a quiet time of year. Hogwash! Things are HAPPENING right now. The news cycle never sleeps. We don't, either.

Let's roll.

Welcome to a Monday Nightcaps — the one where '90s heartthrob Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel) puts her acting shoes back on and joins a "Sandlot" reboot of sorts set to hit screens next month.

What a time to be alive.

What else? I've got a flag football player getting absolutely leveled during an interception return, the Bills may have created the worst alternate uniform of all time, and the Sophie Cunningham story is already taking a predictable turn.

You do this long enough, you learn to see these things coming from a mile away. I sniffed this one out last week. You'll see.

OK, throw on your favorite NFL theme song to celebrate us being one week closer to football season, and settle in for a Monday 'Cap!

Chills. Every time. God, I miss football.

I'm quite sure I've done this one before, but whatever. Mount Rushmore of NFL theme songs:

Honorable mention? The NFL Network theme song for the 9 a.m. games we all forget about until the second half.

Man. What a song. What a jingle. Brings me back to an old Dolphins game with an old Marino still slinging it. Or with a young Jay Fiedler handing it off to Ricky Williams 400 times a game. Or to Greg Gumbel.

How great was Greg Gumbel? Boy. We had it all, didn't we? Few more weeks, folks. Hang tight.

In the meantime, let's get this class started with Danielle Fishel — AKA Topanga Lawrence from 'Boys Meets World' — turning heads in the premiere trailer for the new Sandlot-esque reboot, Dugout Dads:

Lordy. I could not be more all-in if I tried. This is right down my alley. Couldn't be more in my wheelhouse.

Now, here's the downside ... this series, best I can tell, is only going to be streamable on YouTube. That's not going to play great with some in our audience, and I get that. However, I'd imagine it's easy enough to figure out after the first time.

MLB announces drive-in theater screenings of 'The Sandlot' with live games and fireworks for July 4th

If you have a Smart TV — and most of us do at this point, whether we like it or not — you just have to open the YouTube app and look up Dugout Dads. That's it — I think. Guess we'll all find out together!

Anyway, here's the series synopsis. It doesn't bill itself as a Sandlot sequel/reboot/continuation, but let's be honest ...

It is:

Dugout Dads follows an idealistic dad who volunteers to coach his kids' Little League team and discovers that the most unruly players aren't the ten-year-olds but the other coaches, parents, and sometimes himself.

As someone who grew up playing travel ball in FLORIDA, I can relate. Youth sports are so cutthroat nowadays. Hell, they were cutthroat 15 years ago! Today, they're just downright nasty.

Welcome back, Topanga. Welcome back, Ham Porter! Can't wait.

Now, speaking of youth sports in 2026 ...

Goodness gracious. What a hit! I'll be honest, I had no idea A) these high school flag football events existed during the summer, and B) that ESPN carried them.

We were at a bar Saturday afternoon and it was on a handful of TVs. I did a doubletake when I walked in, because I had no clue what was happening. They also use NFL team logos for the scorebug, which is a nice touch.

Anyway, that's how you prevent a pick-six, boys and girls. That was a business decision, and it was the right one. Lower the shoulder, send a message, keep 'em off the scoreboard and eat the penalty. Easy call. Great form.

Welcome back, football.

OK, let's rapid-fire this final-Monday-of-July class into a big Monday night. First up? Speaking of football ...

My God. What's happening here? How does THAT get the go-ahead from the folks in marketing? The same folks who green-lit that must be the same ones who hit "publish" on Nancy Armour's insane column last week.

It does beg the question — what's the worst alternate uniform you can remember? We live in an age of alternate unis, so there's a ton of content to sift through.

For me? The infamous Jags "Color Rush" Thursday night game from a decade ago really sticks out:

Can't believe it's been 10 years (!!!) since that moment. Blake Bortles, if I remember correctly, warned us that they were "ugly as hell."

He was right.

Finally, on the way out, let's check in with Sophie Cunningham's podcast partner in the wake of her popularity soaring after saying last week that men didn't belong in women's sports:

"Transgender athletes in American sports is such a borderline nonexistent issue that right-wingers have convinced a massive portion of people in our country that these people are a threat to sports in America when mathematically, that's not the case at all," West Wilson said.

"There is, like, 10 transgender athletes in all of the NCAA. I think there are unique questions that can be handled on individual bases, but to allow this to take our attention from housing, healthcare, wars, all the other actual harmful s–t in our country is dumb."

OK, West Wilson. Thanks for the lecture, pal. Nothing like getting a lecture from a guy who hops on ... TikTok ... to give it. Those are always the best. And then he brings up housing, healthcare and wars, as if he has a single clue about any of those issues.

Come on. The whole "this is a non-issue!" argument when it comes to transgenders in women's sports is so exhausting. Hey, dummies — YOU guys made it the issue when you REFUSED to condemn it during the 2024 elections.

And by the way ... you STILL do today! This is a 95-5 issue in America, yet the left refuses to admit they're wrong. They can't.

So, yes, it's an issue. OutKick has written about multiple cases — new cases — of this "non-issue" being an issue this year alone.

Sophie Cunningham gets support from GOP senator after backlash over transgender sports comments

That argument is what they use when they have nothing of actual substance to say, by the way. It's the easiest way to spot a fraud.

Whew. What a WAY to end today's class! That's how you start a new week, folks. Let's keep grinding and end this month strong.

Sound like a plan? Good!

Take us home, Sophie. Don't bend the knee. Don't let them steal the narrative!
