DAVID MARCUS: In Middle America, socialist politics ages like milk
Erick was here for a conference on transportation technology when I talked to him about his hometown of Denver, and how socialist congressional candidate Melat Kiros recently won a shocking Democratic primary over her more moderate rival.
"I’m a Democrat," Erick told me. "I lean a bit to the Republican side maybe, but these socialists are crazy."
In his 40s, having lived for 15 years in England, Erick is socially liberal, but also patriotic. He has concerns about AI and data centers, but also sees their utility. In short, he is exactly the kind of Democratic voter that is thinking twice about his affiliation with the party amid the rise of Marxism within.
I asked how long before Election Day Erick had even heard of Kiros and her commie candidacy.
"A week, maybe?" he said. "It was fast, and I’m even involved in the very local politics on the homeowner level. She just came out of nowhere."
This is a repeating pattern now for the far-left socialist congressional candidates across the country. Nobody in New York, or beyond, knew who Darializa Chevalier was about two weeks before she knocked off longtime Rep. Adriano Espailat. Same for likely future member of Congress Claire Valdez.
This is the same model that was used by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in his 2025 primary race, and by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018 when she knocked off Rep. Joe Crowley. It has three steps.
First, a 24/7, 365-day-a-year organizing machine that harnesses and harvests votes for the socialist party. Second, the use of non-traditional media to introduce the wacky candidate to the equally wacky activist class. Third, a mainstream introduction with very little time left to kick the socialist tires.
This is exactly how, by the time Erick had ever heard of Milot Kiros, she had all but already won.
As successful as this socialist model has been in congressional races across the nation, Senate contests are proving to be a tougher nut to crack, in large part because they require candidates like Adbul El-Sayed in Michigan to stay in the spotlight for an extended period. That would be the same spotlight that melted former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner.
It brings to mind the presidential candidacy of Kamala Harris, which she says she lost because 107 days wasn’t enough time to campaign. In fact, it was probably too long to campaign; she might have won a 15-day race, and that is exactly the type the DSA likes to run.
As Terry, who is in her 30s and a Detroit native, told me of El-Sayed, "There keep being these crazy things he said in the past, they keep coming," a fact that even CNN’s Jake Tapper acknowledged in an interview with El-Sayed about his refusal to celebrate the death of Iran’s ayatollah, which went so badly for the candidate that El-Sayed is now trashing CNN at his rallies.
The biggest hope now for El-Sayed’s opponent Rep. Haley Stevens is that he has peaked too soon. Her ads are hitting the airwaves at a frantic pace in an effort to make that so.
When I arrived in Detroit last week, there were still barely any TV ads airing. By the day I left, Stevens ads were thick on screens everywhere, news channels, sports channels, the Hallmark channel, you name it.
The theme of these ads, beyond just saying that El-Sayed is not electable, are his previous comments attacking both former President Barack Obama and current Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, neither of whom have endorsed in the race.
The message is clear: El-Sayed is not a normal Democrat, but a radical, and Stevens still has two weeks left to make this charge stick as Abdul insists he isn’t a socialist while sharing the stage with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and AOC.
Unlike Erick in Colorado, who had the sudden success of socialist Kiros thrust upon him before he even knew it was happening, Michigan voters have had time to examine El-Sayed and still have time to do so.
It raises an important question for our current political moment: Are the Marxists of the Democratic Socialists of America even trying to win the votes of Democrats like Erick, or are they simply trying to blindside them?
The sneaky, last-minute surprise approach has done well for the communists on the congressional level, but if they want to win statewide, or nationwide, they need to win American voters over, not simply pull a fast one on them.
