Myst and Riven Remakes Coming to PS5 with Enhanced Graphics

No matter how many fancy new games hit our gaming systems, sometimes you just can’t beat a classic.

Cyan Worlds and Sony announced this week that remakes of Myst and Riven are coming to the PS5 and PS VR2 this month.

A true original

Myst is one of the true OGs of advanced video gaming. Or at least that was the case in the 1990s.

Back then, the 32-bit PlayStation was advanced compared to the 16-bit Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, so games for the newer system had a different look and feel.

PC games were also far superior at the time — perhaps none more than Myst with its stunning visuals and engrossing puzzle-based gameplay.

It was the best-selling game on PC for a decade and gave way to multiple sequels, including Riven in 1997.

What’s new with these releases?

According to Cyan development director Hannah Gamiel, both games are officially PS5 Pro Enhanced.

“This means a couple of things in our case,” Gamiel wrote for a post on the Playstation Blog. “The first of which is an increase in graphical fidelity in each game’s flatscreen mode on PS5 Pro, including better view distance, foliage, textures, post-processing, and shading.”

So while the visuals were always ahead of their time, they should be even more impressive in the new editions as PS5s flex their muscle.

In both games, players in VR mode will have better base render resolution when playing each game, and the games are taking advantage of tweaked implementations of Unreal Engine’s TSR.

That allows the developers to use upscaling on both Pro and base models to produced better graphics options.

PlayStation 5 users have already had access to original versions of Myst and Riven thanks to digital releases last year. That will continue, but now the games have been remastered to take advantage of both the PS5 and PS5 Pro.

That means the option to play either in 2D (flatscreen) mode or VR2.

In flatscreen mode, the new releases will support ray tracing through the display of ray-traced reflections, although that will slow down each game’s framerate if enabled.

Power Saver Mode is also available on the new versions.

When are Myst and Riven available?

Both games are scheduled to be available for purchase on May 19 at the price of $34.99.

They can be placed in a user’s wishlist now.

While Myst is already available on Xbox Series X/S at the $34.99 price point, Riven is available for pre-order at a discounted price ($27.99).

Versions of Myst and Riven are also available for PC, Mac, and Meta Quest.
