Mets Minors Recap: Wenninger Dazzles, Guzman Goes Deep Again

The Mets’ minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday, with both Single-A teams losing. The Double-A and Triple-A teams found a way to win alongside the Mets in Colorado. The big story of the day was a gem of a start from Jack Wenninger, who fired six scoreless innings en route to a Syracuse victory. He improved his ERA in Triple-A to 1.27. Outside of a slightly elevated walk rate, some of the best work of Wenninger’s development has been on display in his four starts in Triple-A so far, so Mets fans are finding lots of reason to be excited.

Triple-A

Syracuse Mets 3, Rochester Red Wings 1

Box Score

Ryan Clifford kicked off the scoring for the Syracuse Mets with a bomb to right-center, and they never looked back, getting contributions from Christian Arroyo and Hayden Senger as well. A.J. Ewing went without a hit, but he drew a walk, so his OPS stands at .969 so far in Triple-A.

  • RHP Jack Wenninger: 6 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K (1.27 ERA)
  • RHP Dan Hammer: 1 IP, ER, 2 H (0.87 ERA)
  • RHP Alex Carrillo: 1 IP, H, BB, 2 K (5.56 ERA)
  • LHP Anderson Severino: 1 IP, K (0.00 ERA)

Jack Wenninger fanned five batters in his six scoreless innings of work, where he allowed two hits and walked three. He has looked sharp overall and builds off a scoreless outing during his last start. This was the first time he finished six innings this year. Anderson Severino continued his strong start to the season, as he has yet to allow a run and shut the door on the Red Wings for his fourth save of the season.

Double-A

Binghamton Rumble Ponies 4, Hartford Yard Goats 3

Box Score

Chris Suero slugged a home run in the bottom of the first, but this game would go into extras and only see Binghamton win after Serrano flew into a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th. Jose Ramos would add his fourth home run of the year in the game as part of a two-hit performance, while Kevin Parada and TT Bowens each had two-hit days of their own.

Binghamton’s pitching struck out 16 batters in total on Wednesday, with Brendan Girton leading the way with five. Girton started the game and was pulled in the fourth, as his command was not quite up to par. Saul Garcia struck out the side in his scoreless inning of work, and Zach Peek was able to vulture a win after a strong top of the 10th inning, where he prevented the automatic runner from scoring.

High-A

Bowling Green Hot Rods 8, Brooklyn Cyclones 4

Box Score

The Cyclones only mustered six hits on Wednesday against the Hot Rods, and four of them came from the three gentlemen listed above. Yonatan Henriquez and Colin Houck provided the others. Henriquez’s double was his first hit of the year — he has gone 1-for-19 (.053) so far. Antonio Jimenez is also struggling to acclimate to High-A, as another day without a hit drops his average to .125 and his OPS to .404.

Joel Díaz started this game and got roughed up for six runs. He gave up seven hits and walked two more batters while striking out five, and he saw his ERA rise to 9.13 so far in High-A. Parker Carlson continued his strong work and kept the Hot Rods off the scoreboard, even with two hits allowed.

Low-A

Lakeland Flying Tigers 5, St. Lucie Mets 4

Box Score

Stop me if you have heard this one before: Elian Peña got on base and stole a base, and Randy Guzman hit a home run. Now, Peña did strike out another two times, but he has continued to look very comfortable at the plate. Guzman crushed his seventh home run of the year and has displayed an impressive power tool during his time in St. Lucie.

St. Lucie only needed three arms to traverse the game on Wednesday, as Joel Lara and Conner Ware each gave them multiple innings of work. Lara allowed four runs in his three innings of work, including a home run to Beau Ankeney. Ware struck out five in his four innings of bulk relief, but he was responsible for giving up the fifth run and took the loss.
