Google Unveils 5 New AI Search Features to Push Users Deeper Into the Web
Google is giving its AI-powered Search tools a major refresh, this time with a stronger focus on helping people discover websites, communities, and trusted sources instead of stopping at AI-generated answers.
The company announced on Wednesday five updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews, introducing more direct links, community discussions, subscription access, and deeper source previews to help users explore information beyond AI-generated summaries.
The changes arrive as Google continues reshaping Search around generative AI, while also facing criticism from publishers and users worried that AI summaries could reduce traffic to original websites.
Google wants AI search to become a starting point
In a blog post, Hema Budaraju said the company is working to improve its AI search tools at connecting people with “authentic voices” and useful content from across the web.
“We’re continuing to improve how we show links in our AI Search features, and developing new ways to help you find the sources, brands and websites you value,” Budaraju wrote in Google’s announcement.
One of the biggest additions is a new “explore further” style section that appears at the end of AI-generated answers. Instead of stopping at a single summary, users will now see links to related articles, case studies, and deeper analysis tied to different angles of a topic.
AI Overviews will pull more human opinions
Another major update brings more firsthand perspectives directly into AI responses. Google said AI Overviews will now feature snippets from public discussions, online forums, and social platforms, alongside links to full conversations. The feature is designed to help users discover advice from people with real-world experience on a topic.
According to Google, searches about photographing the northern lights could surface comments from photography communities discussing exposure settings and shooting techniques, complete with creator names or community labels.
The move further expands Google’s growing reliance on community-driven platforms like Reddit and other discussion forums inside Search results.
Subscription content gets priority access
Google is also introducing a feature that highlights content from users’ existing news subscriptions directly inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. The company said early testing showed people were “significantly more likely to click links that were labeled as their subscriptions.”
The update could offer some reassurance to publishers concerned that AI-generated summaries could replace direct website visits. Publishers can now connect subscription systems with Google through a dedicated linking program. The move reflects wider efforts across the search and publishing industries to balance AI-powered discovery with publisher monetization.
More links, more context
Another change increases the number of links embedded directly within AI-generated responses.
Instead of placing source links only at the bottom of a summary, Google will now position them next to specific sections of text. Users reading an AI-generated travel summary, for instance, may see links next to details on terrain, training tips, or route recommendations.
Google is also rolling out desktop hover previews for inline links. Hovering over a link in an AI response displays a preview of the website name and page title before users click through. The company said the feature is meant to help users feel more confident about visiting external sites.
AI Search keeps evolving
The latest update comes as Google continues to aggressively expand AI within Search. The company has increasingly pushed users toward AI Overviews and AI Mode, which offer chatbot-style answers instead of traditional lists of links.
Google is now trying to position AI summaries less as final answers and more as navigation tools that guide users toward deeper exploration. Google said it will continue testing and refining the features as AI-powered Search evolves.
