Malawians To Hold Demons Against Purchase of Amaryllis Hotel…Says hotel should not continue operating under Yusuf Investments
Activists under the Malawi-Led Black Economic and Empowerment Movement (Mablem) have announced plans for vigils and demonstrations at the Amaryllis Hotel on 18 May 2026, demanding answers over its controversial purchase using pension funds.
Mablem national coordinator Fryson Chodzi says the hotel should not continue operating under Yusuf Investments while investigations into the K128 billion deal are still ongoing, with MK 90 billion already been paid.
“We cannot sit back while pension funds are at risk. The hotel should either be returned to government or the money fully recovered,” Chodzi said.
The group says it will mobilize civil servants and concerned citizens for peaceful vigils under the slogan “Occupy Amaryllis: Return the money or surrender the hotel.”
Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee is still probing the matter, with key officials yet to be questioned.
Some observers say the committee may struggle to finalise its report without their testimony, especially as former Principal Secretary to the President and Cabinet Colleen Zamba is reportedly outside the country and said to be seeking asylum in South Africa, raising doubts over her availability to appear before the inquiry in the near future.
