Over 4,700 Afghans return as UN warns only 11% are employed
More than 4,700 Afghan migrants returned to Afghanistan in a single day, media reported, as the UN warns most returnees face unemployment challenges.
More than 4,700 Afghan migrants returned to the country in a single day, Taliban-controlled media reported, highlighting a continued surge in cross-border returns from neighbouring countries.
Bakhtar News Agency said on Wednesday, May 6, that 4,711 individuals, including 897 families, entered Afghanistan in the latest wave of returns.
The United Nations has warned that only around 11 percent of returnees are currently employed, underscoring growing concerns over unemployment and reintegration challenges inside Afghanistan.
The latest figures come just days after more than 800 families reportedly returned, reflecting a steady flow of migrants arriving from Iran and Pakistan amid tightening residency and border policies in both countries.
The United Nations estimates that around 2.8 million Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan in 2025 alone, placing additional pressure on already strained humanitarian services inside Afghanistan.
UN-Habitat has also reported that nearly three million returns in the previous year contributed to a population increase of about 10 percent, intensifying demand for housing, jobs, and basic infrastructure in urban and rural areas.
