The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 7th May) - Farke has delivered on his manifesto, so what next?

Good Morning. It's Thursday 7th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Farke has delivered on his manifesto - so what next?

Daniel Farke has more than delivered on his manifesto this season, steadying Leeds United's ship after the turbulence of relegation and ensuring the Whites will compete in the Premier League again next term. With top flight safety all but secured, the club now faces a critical juncture that will Shape its trajectory for years to come. Farke's current contract runs through the 2026/27 season, and unless there is a complete rethink from 49ers Enterprises, he is expected to see out the duration of that agreement. This extended runway provides both opportunity and complexity, particularly as the summer transfer window approaches with a reported war chest of £120 million plus additional funds from player sales.

For the Whites, this represents a fascinating juncture! Farke has defied the odds and with when forced out of his comfort zone, but proven himself quite the tactician, but the harsh reality suggests that 49ers Enterprises will eventually extend beyond his perceived ceiling. Once Farke's current deal concludes (at the end of next season), Leeds will likely seek to elevate their project with a manager who represents a further step up, perhaps someone with Premier League pedigree or European experience.

So how do Leeds approach this summer's transfer window? Do they spend conservatively this summer, recruiting only for bare necessities to survive relegation battle, or embrace a more aggressive strategy and bring in a marquee signing or two, capable of transforming the squad's quality? A conservative approach protects the club's financial future while avoiding the pitfalls of lavish spending, should they struggle to adapt. Conversely, splurging on proven Premier League talents could accelerate the project's evolution, sending a statement of intent while providing Farke with the tools necessary to exceed modest expectations.

Given the circumstances, Leeds United would be wise to pursue a balanced strategy that avoids the extremes of both austerity and recklessness. The club should invest intelligently in positions of genuine need, targeting players with Premier League experience who can contribute immediately without commanding astronomical fees. Simultaneously, retaining the core of the squad that secured promotion and allowing Farke's tactical system to develop organically would maintain the stability that has defined this successful campaign. By combining smart recruitment with fiscal responsibility, Leeds can strengthen their hand for the challenging season ahead while preserving the flexibility required to make further strides towards mid table safety.

Leeds eye defensive overhaul as summer recruitment plans take shape

Leeds United's defensive unit is set to undergo significant scrutiny this summer, as the club look to strengthen at the back ahead of what they hope will be a more competitive Premier League campaign. With Daniel Farke understood to be prioritising centre-back reinforcements, the potential arrivals of high-profile targets could fundamentally reshape the defensive pecking order at Elland Road — and force some difficult conversations with established members of the squad.

Leeds are reportedly targeting two defensive additions. The club is said to be considering a move for Santiago Bueno, whose Wolves side suffered relegation this season, with the Uruguayan valued at approximately £13m. Additionally, the Whites are monitoring Danilho Doekhi's situation at Union Berlin, with the Dutch defender available as a free agent this summer. Either signing would represent a considerable statement of intent from the 49ers hierarchy.

The question, of course, is who makes way. Sebastiaan Bornauw and Pascal Struijk may both find themselves squeezed out if the club land two high-calibre additions, while Joe Rodon — a fan favourite and model of consistency across the 2025-26 season — cannot consider himself entirely untouchable either. Since transitioning to a back five, Farke has regularly paired Rodon with Jaka Bijol, and it is the Slovenian who is widely regarded as the stronger of the two. Were Leeds to land someone of Doekhi's level alongside Bueno, the arithmetic becomes uncomfortable for those currently occupying the defensive berths. Tough decisions will need to be made if Leeds are to move up to the next rung of the ladder.
