How Jeff Bezos Allegedly Hit Back At Justin Theroux Over His ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Character
In The Devil Wears Prada 2, Justin Theroux plays a spray-tanned tech billionaire with a receding hairline who is looking to acquire Runway magazine for his girlfriend, Emily Blunt’s character, after his divorce from his altruistic philanthropist ex (Lucy Liu). Sound familiar? Jeff Bezos allegedly sees the parallels and used his controversial Met Gala role to hit back.
Theroux’s character in the legacy sequel quickly drew comparisons to the Amazon founder for several reasons, but mainly due to Bezos and second wife Lauren Sánchez’s recent efforts to cozy up to the fashion industry, including a July 2025 Vogue cover amid rumors that Bezos plans to acquire Vogue’s parent company, Conde Nast.
Now, a source claims that Bezos did not take The Devil Wears Prada 2 lightly and opted to cut Theroux out of the Met Gala guest list in order to quash the comparison.
“Justin’s character is Jeff, plain and simple,” an insider told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack. “And Jeff has zero sense of humor when the joke is about him — or Lauren. He can laugh at almost anything else. But mock him, mock her, and you’re done.”
Indeed, Theroux was not at the 2026 Met Gala, where Bezos and Sánchez served as honorary co-chairs after a reported $10 million donation. His The Devil Wears Prada 2 co-stars Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Anne Hathaway repped the film in his absence. Though it’s possible that Theroux, who last attended the Met Gala in 2019, was too busy with his and wife Nicole Brydon Bloom’s baby son, who was born in mid-April, to attend.

As for The Devil Wears Prada 2, screenwriter Aline Brosh-McKenna implied to Variety in an interview published on May 3 that Bezos may not have anything to worry about. “Well, we already had a script and were making the movie when the rumors [of Bezos considering an acquisition of Conde Nast] started happening,” she said. “It wasn’t inspired by anything. But, we did say, ‘Whoa,’ when it happened.”
A spokesperson for Blunt also told Variety in an April 23 report that it was “absolutely not true” that her character was based on Sánchez. Perhaps that allowed her to keep that Met Gala invite!
