Tottenham may face a tough but exciting choice between Luka Vuskovic and Marcos Senesi - Opinion

Tottenham Hotspur may sign Marcos Senesi this summer, but Luka Vuskovic’s good form on loan shows their future defence could already be here. Roberto De Zerbi now has to choose between short-term experience or trusting a young player for the future.

Tottenham Hotspur are heading into a very important summer, especially when it comes to their defence. With less pressure than before, this transfer window could be a chance to rebuild properly. The club have already explored a free move for Andy Robertson, which shows a clear desire to bring in experience and leadership.

At the same time, interest in Marcos Senesi shows they are also looking for defensive stability. Senesi is now in a strong position to join Spurs when his Bournemouth contract ends. He has grown into a dependable centre-back and now looks ready for a bigger challenge.

However, before any decisions are made, Spurs must first finish the season strongly. The Lilywhite still remain close to the relegation zone, and with only a three gameweek left, Roberto De Zerbi’s first job is to settle the team and secure safety so as to avoid the drop. Once that is done, attention will quickly turn to how he can rebuild his defence, and one clear option is Senesi.

How Marcos Senesi would improve Tottenham’s defensive problems

If Spurs move for Senesi, it would be with one clear aim which is stability. This season has shown that their defence lacks balance, and that has been a major reason for inconsistent performances. Mistakes, injuries, and lack of control in key moments have left the backline exposed too often.

Even when Spurs have looked competitive, they have struggled to manage games properly from a defensive point of view. Senesi offers something different. He is calm, steady, and focused on simple defending. He does not take unnecessary risks and rarely loses his discipline, which is something the Lilywhite have been missing in certain matches this season.

That reliability has made him a strong target. He wins his duels consistently, and keeps his game under control even under pressure. In a team that has often looked uncertain at the back, that kind of profile is valuable. Because of that, he is seen as a player who could improve Spurs immediately rather than waiting for him to develop. And If the Tottenham want a quick fix to their defensive problems, Senesi fits that role perfectly well.

Why Spurs are keeping a close eye on Luka Vuskovic development

While Senesi offers immediate stability, Spurs are also looking beyond him and keeping close attention on Luka Vuskovic for a very different reason. The young defender is currently impressing on loan and continues to build a strong case for a bigger role in the future.

At just 19, he is already showing maturity in his performances, especially in physical and defensive situations, which is rare at his age. One of his biggest strengths is his aerial ability. He wins a huge number of aerial duels and is already among the top defenders in Europe in that area.

In fact, only a few players, including Virgil van Dijk, are ahead of him, which shows how strong he is in the air. That physical strength is backed up by his overall game. On the ball, he is calm, composed, and confident. He has a pass success rate of around 83.1%, which is better than Senesi’s 77% record. This shows he can help Spurs build from the back, not just defend.

He has also added goals to his game, scoring five this season. That makes him a real danger from set pieces and adds another strong part to his profile as a modern centre-back. When compared to Spurs’ current defenders, his numbers in key defensive areas already stand out. Cristain Romero has 73 aerial duels won, Micky Van de Ven has 42, and Senesi has 86, while Vuskovic sits at 137, which highlights his impact despite his age.

Because of this, Vuskovic is no longer seen as just a long-term project. His performances shows he is already producing at a high level, and the club believe the time may be right to involve him much more sooner rather than later.

A key decision for Roberto De Zerbi

This leaves De Zerbi with an important choice. Senesi brings experience, control, and can improve the defence right away. Vuskovic offers long-term quality and is already showing strong signs at a high level.

In reality, Spurs do not have to choose only one. There is a strong case for having both in the squad. Senesi could help straight away by bringing stability and calm to the defence. At the same time, Vuskovic can keep developing without pressure. He can be slowly brought into the team as he grows and improves.

In this setup, Senesi would not block him. He would act more like cover, helping the team now while Vuskovic prepares for the future and this would give the Lilywhite balance in the squad. They would be stronger in the short term but still protect a young talent for the long term.

But there is also a risk. If Spurs depend too much on experienced signings, it could slow down Vuskovic’s development, even though he already looks ready to play senior football. Vuskovic is no longer just a future player. He is already showing he can compete, and Spurs will soon need to decide how quickly they trust him.

The bigger picture for Tottenham

In the end, this is not just about picking between two defenders. It is about the direction Spurs want to take under De Zerbi.

They could go for Senesi and bring in a safer, more experienced option who helps the team straight away. At the same time, they could place more trust in Vuskovic, who is already showing signs he can become a key player for the club.

It all comes down to balance. Spurs can look for quick fixes to steady things now, or they can build with young players who could shape the defence for years to come.
