Ares Judo Premiership Returns on 30th May
The highly anticipated Ares Judo Premiership returns on Saturday 30th May, promising another unforgettable showcase of elite domestic judo as the competition enters an exciting new era.
Founded in 2024, Ares Judo was created with a clear athlete-focused vision — to build a competition environment that puts judoka at the centre of the experience. In just a short time, the organisation has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting additions to the British judo calendar.
Speaking ahead of the new season, Ares Judo co-founder Joe Chraniuk reflected on the growth of the league and the ambition driving it forward.
“Ares Judo was founded in 2024 with a clear vision: to create a competition environment that is truly athlete-focused. In a short space of time, we feel we’ve built something the judo community recognises and gets excited about, and we’re only just getting started.”
The 2026 season marks a major development for the league structure with the introduction of promotion and relegation, adding even more intensity and jeopardy to every contest.
High Wycombe and Pinewood have secured promotion to the Premiership, while The Budokwai and Judo Club Esprit will compete in the Championship as they aim to fight their way back into the top division.
“It’s a huge moment for the structure of the league and adds even more meaning to every match,” said Chraniuk.
Defending champions Camberley return with their sights set on retaining the title, but the battle for Premiership glory is expected to be fiercer than ever.
Joining them in this season’s Premiership line-up are Bradley Stoke, Ryecroft, Garioch, Ealing, Enfield, High Wycombe and Pinewood — all determined to make their mark in what promises to be a thrilling campaign.
Alongside the action on the tatami, organisers are continuing to elevate the event experience for athletes and spectators alike.
“This year, we’re pushing the event experience even further — more lighting, more production, more energy, and even a half-time show,” Chraniuk explained.
“Our goal is to create more moments, more memories, and more passion than ever before. If you love judo and haven’t experienced an Ares event yet, it’s one you don’t want to miss.”
With demand already high, only a limited number of tickets remain available.
The growth of Ares Judo is also extending beyond senior competition with the launch of Ares Futures — a new platform designed to bring the same atmosphere and excitement to younger judoka.
Featuring full production, music, and the innovative ‘double ippon’ ruleset to encourage a time-on-task approach, the initiative has already received an overwhelmingly positive response.
“We’re excited to keep building opportunities for younger age groups,” said Chraniuk. “Cadets and pre-cadets — your time is coming.”
Ares Judo remains committed to creating opportunities across all levels and abilities within the sport.
“We believe this is something everyone in judo should have the chance to experience.”
Chraniuk also paid tribute to the clubs, coaches, athletes, volunteers and supporters who have helped the organisation grow so rapidly.
“None of this would be possible without the support of the judo community. From the clubs, coaches, athletes and volunteers, to everyone who has supported, attended, shared and believed in what we’re building — thank you.
“Your backing has helped turn an idea into something real, and we’re incredibly grateful for every part you’ve played in the journey so far.”
