Boat Maintenance Tips for Caribbean Season
Getting Ready for Launch in the Tropics
While vessel owners in northern climates are putting their boats to bed, those in the Caribbean are preparing for the season ahead. Whether launching or maintaining, proper preparation can extend the life of your vessel and improve performance on the water.
AkzoNobel, a global leader in marine coatings, shares practical advice to simplify maintenance and ensure your boat is ready to go.
1. Clean Hulls Carefully
Use a 25° or 15° pressure washer tip to remove slime and marine growth. Avoid using a 0° or rotary tip, as it can damage surfaces and coatings.
Work from the top down and take care around rubber components like outdrives. Rinse bilges and tanks gently to protect antifouling systems.
2. Assess Above-Water Areas
Inspect decks and hull sides for dull or chalky finishes. If repainting isn’t required, polish the surface using the appropriate compound.
Apply protective products such as Awlgrip® Awlcare® to help guard against UV exposure, salt, and environmental pollutants.
3. Check Below the Waterline
Examine underwater surfaces for coating damage, rust, worn paint, or signs of electrolysis on metal components.
If coatings are failing—particularly after eight years or more—consider stripping back and applying a barrier coat such as InterProtect® or Tuff Stuff for long-term protection.
What This Means for Boaters
- Proper hull cleaning preserves antifouling performance
- Routine inspections prevent costly repairs
- Protective coatings extend vessel lifespan
- Seasonal prep ensures a smoother launch and cruising experience
