Minister pumps in K12 million towards Likoma Island Festival
Likoma, May 5, Mana: Deputy Minister of Health, Charles Chilambula, has contributed K12 million towards Likoma Island Festival (LIFE) to boost the island’s cultural and tourism activities.
Chilambula, also MP for Likoma Islands Constituency, made the contribution Tuesday at Hotel Annavilla7 in Lilongwe during LIFE’s first press briefing outlining activities for the 2026 festival scheduled for October 15 to 18.
“The support is aimed at attracting more visitors and to change the negative perceptions about the island. Likoma Island as one of the most beautiful destinations deserving wider recognition,” said Chilambula.
He added that, the initiative aligns with government efforts to promote tourism, generate revenue, and preserve culture, encouraging islanders to safeguard their traditions.
He said the funds will support traditional dances and games such as Kedemu, Ageni Ageni, and Chibado, helping revive cultural practices while attracting potential investors.
LIFE Executive Director Patrick Chikoti thanked the minister, saying the theme links tourism, arts, and culture, and pledged to use the funds responsibly while promoting environmental cleanliness on the islands
