Former Pakistan Envoy Says Afghanistan Stability Hinges on Inclusive Rule
Asif Durrani said calls for “regime change” risk distracting from the real solution to Afghanistan, stressing that lasting stability depends on an inclusive and legitimate government shaped by Afghans themselves.
In a statement posted on social media, Durrani said externally driven political change may align with foreign agendas but would not address Afghanistan’s core challenges, including governance, legitimacy and public trust.
He criticized the Taliban for rejecting political pluralism and broader participation, warning that this has weakened both domestic and international legitimacy.
Durrani noted that political power remains concentrated between key Taliban factions, including leadership circles in Kabul and Kandahar, limiting meaningful inclusion and decision-making across society.
He emphasized that no political system based on exclusion can endure, warning that a government failing to reflect Afghanistan’s ethnic and political diversity remains fragile and at risk of collapse.
Afghanistan has faced ongoing political and economic crisis since 2021, with limited international recognition of the curent administration and continued restrictions affecting governance and development.
Analysts say the absence of inclusive political structures in Afghanistan has complicated stabilization efforts, as humanitarian needs rise and economic pressures continue to deepen across the country.
Asif Durrani said political change is inevitable, but its direction will shape Afghanistan’s future, particularly whether the Taliban respond to demands for broader inclusion and participation.
He warned that failure to recognize the need for inclusivity could prolong instability, weaken governance and further isolate Afghanistan on the international stage.
Tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border have also intensified, with recurring clashes and security concerns linked to militant activity, underscoring the risks of continued instability in the region.
