Popular Potato Chip Brand, Utz, Issues Voluntary Recall due to Salmonella
It was once estimated that Americans consume nearly 2 billion pounds of potato chips each year, and in a world where many big brands help satisfy this obvious consumer desire, one such brand is voluntarily recalling its chips. As the US Food and Drug Administration recall statement describes, the products are being recalled “out of an abundance of caution” for Salmonella. Although, to be clear, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the chips. Here’s what we know.
Utz Issues Recall on Select Zapp’s and Dirty Potato Chips
On May 4, 2026, Utz Quality Foods, LLC, a subsidiary of Utz Brands, Inc, issued a voluntary recall on limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips in the US. The company was notified that a particular seasoning containing dry milk powder, and supplied by a third-party supplier, may contain the presence of Salmonella. Although the impacted batches of seasoning tested negative for Salmonella before they were used in the Utz chips, Utz is voluntarily recalling products out of “an abundance of caution.”

What Is Salmonella?
Again, UTZ hasn’t reported any cases of Salmonella attached to the recall. However, for information sake, Salmonella is described by the FDA as an organism that can cause serious infections. People with Salmonella often report having fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, with more serious cases involving other illnesses like arterial infections and endocarditis.
