Iran Warns Trump Plan Risks ‘Quagmire,’ Calls It Dead End
Iran warned Trump’s “Project Freedom” risks dragging the United States into deeper conflict, rejecting the plan as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran warned that a U.S. plan to secure shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could escalate tensions, calling President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” a “dead end,” according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, May 5.
The report said Trump remains reluctant to launch new strikes on Iran despite recent attacks on ships and the United Arab Emirates, though U.S. and foreign officials indicated military action could still be approved within days.
Washington’s plan focuses on escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy route, after a naval blockade failed to pressure Tehran into concessions over its nuclear program.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said military measures would not resolve the crisis and warned that such actions could drag the United States deeper “into a quagmire,” while stressing that indirect talks via Pakistan were ongoing.
The warning came after Iran-linked attacks targeted shipping and a UAE oil facility in Fujairah, where a drone strike caused a fire and injured three people, according to Emirati officials.
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a fifth of global oil supplies, making it a focal point of tensions, with any disruption posing risks to energy markets and international trade.
A ceasefire reached in April has failed to produce lasting progress, with disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and maritime control continuing to block a broader agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Diplomatic efforts have included mediation attempts and proposals such as Iran’s reported multi-stage peace plan, which called for de-escalation, sanctions relief and long-term security arrangements, but was rejected by Trump as unacceptable.
The United States has also circulated a draft resolution at the United Nations calling for an end to Iran’s blockade of the strait, signaling efforts to build international support while keeping pressure on Tehran.
Analysts say the situation remains highly volatile, with the risk of escalation growing as both sides balance military options and diplomatic channels in a region critical to global stability.
