Jason Newsted Reveals He Left Metallica to Overcome Addiction and Save His Own Life
When it was announced that Jason Newsted had left Metallica in 2001, it was shocking because he'd been with the band for years and seemed so dedicated to it. Then, a narrative that explained the reason for his sudden exit began to take shape, and it held for more than two decades. Now, more than 25 years after he walked away, Newsted has just explained the real reason he left Metallica.
Jason Newsted Left Metallica Because He Was Sick and Needed To Save His Own Life
The fact that Jason Newsted left Metallica in 2001 was devastating news for a generation of music fans who truly loved the incredibly talented bassist. As a result, there has been endless discussion and numerous well-sourced articles that quoted the band's members talking about his departure. In those tellings, Newsted was practically forced out of the band because he was completely stifled creatively and was being blocked from participating in his side project, Echobrain.
To be clear, those stories were solid and based on real statements from Newsted and his former bandmates who lamented his exit. However, when Newsted appeared on the "Let There Be Talk Podcast" on May 3, 2026, he revealed the real reason he left Metallica. As the iconic bassist explained, he was an addict who left the band to get the treatment he needed to survive.
“You have to make harsh ass decisions that no f****r understands. You know, ‘What is he doing?’ They're not in my shoes, man. What the f**k? I'm not in yours. You're not in mine. There's no way you can know. One thing I want to straighten out, or just comment on, is the Echobrain thing. That was another project that I took to a certain level. I had 40 projects in the chop house to a level of recording, composition, rehearsal, that kind of thing. This one was just more promising, and I took it to a different place. But it's not the reason I left Metallica.”
Newsted continued, “The reason I left Metallica is because I was a horrible addict. I was way up against myself and if I didn't get some kind of help, I was going to die. And so I just said, ‘You guys, can I have a minute? Please give me a minute.’ And they said, ‘No.’”
Newsted finished, “I said, ‘I would rather live than be in your band. I love being in your band. I think it's kind of obvious. I wear your shirt every f*****g night.’ So it's like, you know, ‘I wear our shirt every night. I fly my colors every night. I meet every f*****g person that wants to meet and represent us for all the fans every f*****g night. Don't tell me I'm not committed. Don't tell me I'm not loyal. Don't tell me. I'm always the first one in and last one out. I'm not saying the words. It's f*****g history.’ You can't give me that minute to get my head straight again. Then I have to go. Not that I don't love you, and certainly not that I'm not committed to this band. It wasn’t about Echobrain.”
