Agape Khombe, Billy Malata To March Against Jomo Osman
Citizens for Justice and Equity has announced plans to hold peaceful demonstrations in Lilongwe on Wednesday, 7 May, against Blantyre City Mayor Jomo Osman over allegations of assault.
The group says the move follows a viral video circulating on social media, allegedly showing the mayor assaulting a woman suspected of possessing stolen items.
In a notice submitted to Lingadzi Police, the organisation confirmed the planned demonstrations, signed by its leader Agape Khombe and Operations Director Billy Malata.
The march is expected to start at Lilongwe City Council offices at 9:00am before proceeding to the United States Embassy, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare.
The Ministries of Local Government and Gender have since condemned the incident, saying public officials must act within the law and respect human dignity.
Osman has apologised over the matter, saying his conduct fell short of expected standards and that he is ready to cooperate with investigations.
