Olympic and European champion Uros Stevanovic steps down as Serbia men’s water polo coach
Uros Stevanovic has announced his resignation as head coach of Serbia’s men’s national water polo team, ending a three-and-a-half year tenure during which the team secured Olympic and European Championships gold medals, as well as a fourth-place finish at the World Championships.
The decision follows recent changes within the Serbian Water Polo Federation, where former international goalkeeper Slobodan Soro was elected president.
After taking office, Soro announced the national team head coach should no longer be also in charge of a club side.
Stevanovic – head coach of Radnicki – confirmed his departure through a statement, describing his decision as ‘difficult but inevitable’.
The 43-year-old said: ‘I have decided to submit my irrevocable resignation as head coach of the Serbia men’s national water polo team. This decision was difficult but inevitable.
‘I believe that now new people have taken over leadership of our federation, it is time for new people to be on the poolside as well.’
Reflecting on his successful period in charge, Stevanovic also expressed his gratitude to those he worked alongside.
‘Over the past few years, we leave behind Olympic and European gold, as well as a fourth-place finish at the World Championships.
‘I am proud of every minute of my tenure, and I owe special thanks to all my colleagues and players, without whom these successes would not exist.’
