Meghan Markle's Reported 'Vogue' Misstep May Have Cost Her a Major Fashion Ally
It doesn’t seem unreasonable to think that someone like Meghan Markle would generate an invite to the Met Gala, but it’s being reported that she might have upset the biggest gatekeeper to the elite event.
Meghan and Prince Harry are not on the invite list this year, according to the Daily Mail, because they believe the Duchess of Sussex has a long-running feud with former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. In 2019, Meghan was a coveted star for a potential cover at Vogue, but she went with Wintour’s rival at the time, British Vogue editor Edward Enninful. Meghan went on to guest-edit the September issue of the magazine.
“Meghan pledged her allegiance to Enninful, which p—ed off Anna,” an insider alleged to the U.K. media outlet. “Anna hates her. Meghan doesn’t want to pay and never returns things. Also, Anna loves the Royal Family. She is a Dame. Anna would have hated how they [the Sussexes] handled their exit from The Firm.”
Fans know to take the harsh criticism with a grain of salt, given how the British tabloids usually frame the Sussexes in a bad light. Still, Meghan has been making moves that she is interested in the couture fashion circles. In October 2025, Meghan surprised everyone with a Paris Fashion Week appearance.
Balenciaga’s head designer, Pierpaolo Piccioli, revealed to The Cut that the Duchess of Sussex “reached out and said she’d love to come to the show.” Designers are thrilled to have A-list celebrities attend their show, but it comes at a high cost.
Stylist Phillip Bloch gave NewsNation a breakdown of what the financial investment looks like when you have a star attend your show.
“I would imagine everything was paid for — travel, hotel, clothing, cars, and of course security in Madame’s case, because we know it’s such a big issue with her,” he noted while tallying up a total that could be hundreds of thousands of dollars due to private jets, luxury hotels, and styling fees.
Meghan hasn’t given any indication that the Met Gala has ever been on her radar, but she seems to be slowly tiptoeing toward a future invitation. Yet with the ongoing Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sánchez sponsorship controversy, it might be in the Duchess of Sussex’s best interest to stay at home on a night like tonight. The British tabloids would have had a field day criticizing her attendance instead of hyping up her unconfirmed feud with Wintour.
