Aston Villa could pounce Serie A flop forward in the summer transfer window

Aston Villa could sign the striker who has been considered a Serie A flop this season in the summer transfer.

Aston Villa transfer business has just identified an old target to sign this summer. They have been monitoring the situation in one of the Italian giants, Juventus, lately.

Their new signing, Jonathan David, has been under pressure to prove his quality in Turin. Yet, he has been largely disappointing. According to Tuttosport, the Lions have been eyeing the Canadian forward moving next summer.

David’s dismal spell in Juventus

Jonathan David came to Turin with a great reputation as a prolific goalscorer from Ligue 1. He was instrumental in helping Lille win the league in the 2020/21 season, breaking PSG’s domination.

The Canadian international joined La Vecchia Signora last summer as a free agent, despite the interest of Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa too. Yet, his move there seems to be a wrong one.

David, who had scored more than 100 goals and set up 31 times for the Ligue 1 outfit, appears to struggle with the elite side such as Juventus. So far, he has only been able to contribute eight goals and five assists in 44 games in all competitions. Most of his goals were scored against the low-table sides, except Napoli on matchday 22.

What’s worse, he was even booed by Juventus fans last weekend as he once again failed to deliver his top form when his team were held in a 1-1 draw versus Verona. The former Genk man was eventually substituted in the 69th minute.

It would be interesting to see how much Juventus would agree to release him for. The two-time Champions League winner might sell him with the proper price tag. Securing him next summer would be a positive not on Aston Villa transfer business.

Can he revive his career in Villa Park?

Last summer, Villa were one of the potential suitors, and their decision to possibly reignite their interest could be a gamble too. Yet, there is still room for his improvement too, and joining the West Midland side might be the ideal option for him.

The striker with the current value of £30.24 million could be the real upgrade of Tammy Abraham and the long-term successor of Ollie Watkins. He is an all-round forward who would not mind making a defensive contribution too or pressing when necessary, instead of just being a poacher upfront.

According to FotMob, beside having 78.8% successful passes and 8.81 expected goals, the 26-year-old frontman has made crucial defensive contributions too, including 17 tackles, five interceptions, and 15 times winning possession in the final third.

Villa definitely gives the opportunity to develop for the player of such calibre, plus working under Unai Emery could give him the advantage too. Moreover, the pressure with the Lions’might not be as massive as playing for the Italian giant.
