0.91 xA and 6 chances created: Phenomenal Man Utd star writes his name into the record books vs Liverpool
Manchester United secured a return to the UEFA Champions League by beating Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils exploded out of the blocks, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko firing them into an early two-goal lead.
However, defensive errors allowed Liverpool to make it 2-2 before the clock hit 60 minutes.
Kobbie Mainoo celebrated his new contract by scoring the winner and helping United complete a rare double over their arch-rivals.
While Mainoo rightly took home the Man of the Match award and the headlines, Bruno Fernandes quietly orchestrated another masterclass.
According to Squawka, Fernandes created six chances against Liverpool, the most by a Man United player on record in this fixture.
Two of these opportunities were big chances and should have been converted.
He floated a delightful cross for Benjamin Sesko from the right flank but the 22-year-old failed to make adequate contact and was eventually flagged offside after mistiming his run.
Fernandes showed off incredible skill in the 54th minute to collect a long pass from Casemiro. It was a majestic touch which only a handful of players across Europe could produce.
He immediately squared it to Bryan Mbeumo, whose audacious backheel flick cannoned off the crossbar.
The growing chemistry between Fernandes and Casemiro has already caused havoc six times this season.
That partnership almost produced another moment of magic when Fernandes launched a free-kick from deep in midfield into the box, where the Brazilian was left surprisingly unmarked.
The veteran was only able to guide his header straight at the goalkeeper.
Had that effort found either corner, it would have handed Fernandes a record-equalling 20th assist of the campaign.
The 31-year-old still finished with an impressive expected assists (xA) figure of 0.91.
He now has three games left to break the all-time assist record of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
