Unai Emery realises Aston Villa must be ‘realistic’ following Spurs loss

Aston Villa boss finally realises they must be realistic on their campaign after the Spurs defeat at home.

Aston Villa suffered another loss yesterday. This time it was in front of their own fans at Villa Park against the relegation struggler, Tottenham. 2-1. Spurs had even already taken the two-goal lead in the first half from Conor Gallagher’s long-range shot and Richarlison’s header before Emi Buendia netted a consolation goal late before the final whistle.

This is Villa’s third consecutive defeat already, their first since November 2024. No wonder that Morgan Rogers and Co. were booed after the first half and after the game. Unai Emery is aware of this, and his response in the post-match conference speaks volumes of how the team’s target might change after this defeat, as reported by Birmingham Mail.

“We can perform better or worse, but I am not losing my mind and my point of view about how I want to get it. We lost today because Tottenham performed better than us. They are a very good team. For different circumstances they are not fighting where we are, but we must be realistic about everything.”

How realistic can they be?

Emery seemed to have realised how his team could not rely on the same starting IX in each and every game without risking their fitness or wellness or, even worse, leading to new injuries. The Spaniard would have to make use of the whole squad. Not to mention their skipper’s minor injury. John McGinn would be absent in the Europa League semi-final on Thursday or suffer a more serious injury should the Scotsman be forced to hit the pitch last Sunday.

Such eventually pushed him to rotate the squad. It was the realistic option Emery had to do. Thus, he made seven changes in the lineup from their last outing at the City Ground. Victor Lindelof, Tyrone Mings, Ian Maatsen, Lamar Bogarde, Ross Barkley, Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham got a nod in the starting XI.

With such a lineup, sadly they were struggling to make an impact in the game. In the first half, they failed to create any clear chances. It proved how much of a gap there was in the quality between the first choice and their backup. The Lions no longer have players who could make the difference from the bench like Donyell Malen.

No wonder that Emery accepted the defeat. Perhaps he knew that he had to choose between finishing third in the Premier League or winning the Europa League title. Neither choice is easy, but his decision on rotating the squad might hint that focusing on the latter target seems slightly to be their priority now. It is better to fight all out in UEFA’s second-tier competition more for winning silverware rather than finishing third in the standings.

 Justified Squad Rotation?

Regarding the squad rotation itself, it might have been justified with such reasons. Yet, what might be upsetting the fans, who deserve more than justification of the rotation, is how disappointing their display was on the pitch. Their second team does not appear to be as good as the mainstay.

Villa only made five shots in the game, with none of them even forcing the Spurs’ goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, to make clinical saves yet. Their lack of clinical finish was exposed again. Their lack of creativity to break the deadlock only made it worse. Nevertheless, Emery defended his decision as reported in ExpressandStar.

“We lost on Thursday and lost last week. Maybe it is better to continue playing with the same players, but we lost (those games). Some players have the challenge when they are losing. And the challenge was at Sunderland at home. I made some changes against them, and we won. You were not asking about those changes because we won.

‘If we are losing, maybe it is “Ah, you change”.’ I know before the match my challenge is to win with some changes. But I believe in the players.”

Let’s hope this negative trend comes to an end at the right time and they can bounce back in the next match. This squad rotation might not be their last in the remainder of the season, but what’s more important for Villa is that they could lift the trophy in the end.
