Israeli Strikes Kill Eight in South Lebanon Despite Ceasefire Extension
At least eight people were killed in fresh Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon on Sunday, despite a ceasefire extension brokered by the United States, Lebanese officials said.
Anadolu Agency reported that the attacks hit multiple region in the south, with civilians among the casualties. In one airstrike near the coastal city of Tyre, three people were killed, including two Syrian nationals and one Egyptian, according to the report.
In separate incidents, one person was killed in a drone strike, while two others died when a residential house was targeted, raising concerns about continued civilian harm despite the declared truce.
The Israeli military has not immediately commented on the latest strikes, but it has previously said its operations target militant infrastructure linked to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has also not issued an immediate statement on the incidents.
The escalation comes even as a ceasefire, mediated by the United States, was recently extended in an effort to prevent a broader regional conflict. However, repeated violations have raised doubts about the durability of the truce.
Since the start of intensified Israeli attacks in March, Lebanese authorities say at least 2,700 people have been killed and more than 1.6 million displaced, underscoring the scale of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the country.
The latest violence highlights the fragility of ceasefire arrangements in the Israel-Lebanon border region, which has seen recurring flare-ups linked to the wider war in Gaza. Cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have intensified periodically since late 2023, increasing fears of a full-scale war.
Diplomatic efforts led by Washington and regional actors have sought to contain the conflict, but analysts say the absence of a comprehensive political agreement and continued military activity on both sides risk further escalation, even as international calls for restraint grow louder.
