Carrick reveals reason behind Sesko's early withdrawal vs Liverpool
Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has provided an injury update on striker Benjamin Sesko following the 3-2 Premier League win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils secured Champions League qualification with a thrilling victory over their arch-rivals at home. Matheus Cunha scored an early opener before Sesko doubled the lead.
Liverpool fought back to make it 2-2 after the break from individual errors, but the Red Devils came on top after Kobbie Mainoo netted a brilliant winner from the edge of the box.
In the same game, Sesko picked up a knock after Ibrahima Konate pushed him into the advertising hoardings behind the goal, and this contributed to his half-time substitution.
When asked for an explanation, Carrick said that Sesko suffered a knock to his shin. He sustained the blow in the same region he had been managing and had to be taken off as a result.
He told MUTV: “He got a bang on his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch. It’s something that he’s been carrying for a little bit as well, so we’ve had to manage him a bit, but he’s certainly had a bang right on the same spot. It’s as simple as that, really.”
Sesko has been a revelation since the departure of manager Ruben Amorim in January. He has netted 12 goals this term, with 10 of those after Amorim’s exit.
The Slovenian has obviously benefited from playing in a 4-2-3-1 rather than a 3-4-2-1 system. With the extra attacker, United have created more chances for the former RB Leipzig marksman.
With another three games left in the league campaign, the 22-year-old will hope to hit the 15-goal mark during his maiden season with the Mancunian giants.
United will be in action away at Sunderland on Saturday. Hopefully, Sesko can recover from his knock and return to training in the lead-up to the encounter.
