UNESCO says free journalism vital for peace on Press Freedom Day
UNESCO said free and reliable journalism plays a central role in building peaceful societies, marking World Press Freedom Day with a call to protect independent media worldwide.
The agency stressed that access to verified and trustworthy information is not optional but essential for creating just, resilient, and informed communities.
It warned that manipulated information fuels division and erodes public trust, undermining social cohesion and democratic values across societies.
UNESCO added that free and honest information strengthens accountability, promotes dialogue, and supports the protection of fundamental human rights globally.
According to Reporters Without Borders, press freedom is under growing pressure worldwide, with increasing censorship, political control, and financial constraints affecting independent journalism.
RSF highlighted that funding shortages have forced many media outlets to shut down or scale back operations, weakening access to independent reporting and diverse viewpoints.
Richard Bennett has warned that journalists in Afghanistan face particularly severe conditions, with female journalists encountering additional restrictions, threats, and barriers to work.
He said declining international funding and tightening controls have pushed many journalists—especially women—out of the profession, significantly shrinking independent media space.
UNICEF and other UN bodies have also warned that broader restrictions on rights and access to information have long-term consequences for social development and public awareness.
They stress that limiting independent journalism reduces access to critical information, affecting communities’ ability to respond to crises and make informed decisions.
UNESCO called on governments and the international community to uphold freedom of expression and ensure journalists can work safely, emphasizing that independent media remains a cornerstone of peace and stability.
