Advantage for Man Utd with "world-class" Liverpool star now absent with groin strain
Manchester United have been handed a huge boost ahead of the Premier League derby against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils have picked up 61 points from 34 games into the season, and they are on the cusp of Champions League qualification.
That could be confirmed before the North-West derby if Bournemouth are unable to beat Crystal Palace in tomorrow’s early kick-off.
United, on the other hand, will be eyeing a league double over Arne Slot’s side. They have been given a big boost before the clash.
The Reds are already uncertain over the fitness of key players such as Alisson and Mohamed Salah.
Hugo Ekitike has also been ruled out for the season with a serious Achilles injury. Alexander Isak is now expected to miss out, too.
According to The Sun, the Sweden international picked up a groin strain in training this week and won’t be involved against United.
Isak’s absence should benefit the Red Devils
Isak, who has been described as ‘world-class‘ by Alan Shearer, has had a hugely disrupted debut season at Liverpool due to injuries.
The 26-year-old recently returned from a broken leg for the Reds, and it appears he has suffered another setback after just five games.
Isak will undergo scans on his groin strain to determine whether the Swede can play a part during the remainder of the campaign.
His absence should benefit the Red Devils, given Isak can be menacing for opposition defences on his day with his pace and finishing skills.
Still, United can’t take things for granted. Cody Gakpo will most likely operate as the makeshift centre-forward with Ekitike and Isak ruled out.
Gakpo has been a nemesis for the Red Devils in the past. The Dutchman has netted four times in his previous league meetings against them.
Hence, United can’t expect a straightforward game and must turn up with a strong showing to beat their arch-rivals in front of their supporters.
