Phillies one-hit by Meyer, Marlins to snap four-game winning streak
The Phillies’ four-game winning streak went out with a whimper on Saturday in Miami, as a 4-0 shutdown gave them their first loss under interim manager Don Mattingly.
Marlins starter Max Meyer baffled the Phillies’ offense for seven scoreless, one-hit innings in his deepest start of the season. He struck out seven and walked one.
Garrett Stubbs, the starting left fielder due to a late scratch of Justin Crawford (migraine) and Brandon Marsh’s elbow injury, authored the Phillies’ only hit off Meyer, and he was erased by a double play, so Meyer faced just one over the minimum.
He also struck out Kyle Schwarber three times, which puts Schwarber on inglorious record watch: He’s now struck out in eight consecutive plate appearances. The MLB record for consecutive strikeouts as a batter belongs to Sandy Koufax (ironically) with 12 in 1955; a handful of players tie for the non-pitcher record of nine.
Andrew Painter was opposite Meyer and matched him in strikeouts with seven, across just five innings. The flip side: Painter allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks, two of which came in consecutive two-out, bases-loaded plate appearances in the third inning for a 2-0 Marlins lead.
Xavier Edwards tagged Painter for a solo homer in the fifth, and Tanner Banks surrendered a run in the sixth, bringing the score to the final of 4-0.
The Phillies didn’t fare any better after Meyer left, with 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to end it. It’s their first game this year without multiple hits. It comes after averaging 5.33 runs per game since the day the 10-game losing streak ended.
The Phillies are 13-20.
