Manchester United U18s beaten at Newcastle as Manchester City clinch league title
Manchester United U18s lost 2-0 at Newcastle United in the U18 Premier League North on Saturday afternoon.
Despite coming off the back of an impressive 4-1 victory over Liverpool at Carrington, United began on the back foot.
Newcastle created two chances inside three minutes, with Henry Johnson heading over from close range before Alfie Seldon fired over the crossbar.
The Magpies were rewarded for their bright start, opening the scoring in the 11th minute as Rory Finneran took advantage of a poor clearance to put the ball home.
Casey Wooster doubled the hosts’ advantage before the hour mark after Yuel Helafu was was stripped of the ball.
United eventually grew into the contest, but could not pull one back before the break.
Roman Dowell in the Newcastle goal was called into action moments after the restart, saving James Overy’s shot.
Moments later, Michael Mills thought he had added to the hosts’ tally, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
United fashioned the next opportunity, as Samuel Lusale did well to get the better of his marker and slipped the ball across to Jariyah Shah, whose effort was kept out.
At the other end, substitute Muawiya Ghanem’s curling effort flashed narrowly wide.
The young Reds pushed to the final whistle to stage a comeback, but could not get on the scoresheet, making it the third time they have failed to do so this term.
The result sees Manchester City win the league for the second consecutive season, having beaten Derby County 5-3.
