Iran’s Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi hospitalized after health worsens in prison
Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalized after severe health deterioration in prison, raising renewed international concern over her treatment and detention conditions.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation said Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a hospital after her health sharply deteriorated while in custody in Iran.
In a statement on Friday, the foundation said Mohammadi suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis, describing her condition as critical and requiring urgent medical care.
Prison doctors reportedly determined that treatment inside the facility was no longer possible, recommending immediate transfer to a specialized medical center outside the prison system.
Despite medical advice to send her to a specialist team in Tehran, she was instead moved to a hospital in Zanjan, a decision the foundation described as unavoidable but concerning.
Narges Mohammadi, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has been imprisoned for years over her peaceful human rights advocacy, particularly her work supporting women’s rights.
Human rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns about the health and treatment of detainees in Iran, citing limited access to adequate medical care and reports of deteriorating conditions inside prisons.
Her case has drawn widespread international attention, with activists and organizations urging Iranian authorities to ensure proper medical treatment and reconsider her detention on humanitarian grounds.
The foundation warned that her condition has worsened significantly in recent months, intensifying calls for urgent intervention to safeguard her health and well-being.
