Economy Minister Lex Delles has graced the public with yet another truism wrapped in ministerial pomp. “Innovation is no longer an option, but a necessity”, intoned Lex Delles at Luxinnovation’s annual review. Groundbreaking, Lex Delles. Truly. Meanwhile, the agency he oversees spent the past year handling over 2,000 requests and providing “direct support” to 560 companies. That’s not an innovation engine. That’s a busy call center with ministerial backing. Lex Delles wants you to believe that without his agency’s hand-holding, Luxembourg’s businesses would be staring at walls, unable to innovate. The truth? Luxinnovation is a sprawling middleman – and Lex Delles is its chief cheerleader. Lex Delles proudly boasts that Luxinnovation helped mobilise over €50 million in European funding. Impressive number, Lex Delles. But here’s the question: how much of that went to actual innovation versus covering the agency’s own overhead? Luxinnovation’s director, Mario Grotz, promises that AI will “fundamentally transform business models”. Mario Grotz also admits he needs to “prepare businesses gradually” and make them aware of “potential risks”.
