Fenerbahce fight to beat Tottenham to bargain deal despite early verbal agreement for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur’s summer plans are already taking shape behind the scenes, but a potential deal for Andy Robertson may not be as straightforward as it first appeared, with increased competition for the full-back.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window as they prepare for a major squad rebuild.
Work has already begun even before the window opens, with reports stating that Tottenham and Robertson have already reached a verbal agreement.
However, a deal is contingent on Spurs maintaining their Premier League status this term, with the club currently sat in the bottom three and at risk of losing their top-flight place with four games remaining.
Robertson has also recently called time on his Liverpool career, choosing not to renew his contract, and is set to be a free agent this summer.
Tottenham face transfer competition for Andy Robertson
Despite reports of a verbal agreement between Tottenham and Andy Robertson, they are not expected to have a free run at the full-back.
According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, it is explained that Fenerbahce are also keen on landing the Liverpool man.
Robertson’s agent is said to have recently travelled to Istanbul for talks with the Turkish side, with an offer made to the player, which the 32-year-old is understood to have considered.
However, talks are currently at a standstill due to the upcoming presidential election in the first week of June, with transfers potentially on hold until then.
As a result, Robertson is expected to choose another option, with it highly unlikely that he will wait until June for the Turkish side, which should bode well for Spurs’ chances of landing the full-back.
Spurs face battle with Atletico Madrid for Robertson
But Tottenham are also facing competition from Atletico Madrid, who are in the race for Robertson ahead of the summer transfer window.
Spurs Web reports that Diego Simeone is a big admirer of the Liverpool full-back and is keen on adding the 32-year-old to his squad.
Spurs also value Robertson’s experience as they aim to build a squad capable of competing on all fronts next season, but if they are in the Championship next campaign, those plans could be thrown into doubt.
