Tan France Dyed His Signature Silver Hair Dark For A Film Role
Tan France started going gray at 12 years old, growing up as the son of Pakistani Muslim immigrants in Doncaster, England. He spent decades hiding it before turning the silver quiff into the most recognizable hair in fashion television.
The dark hair is for his first major film role. He’s playing book agent Aidan Sullivan in “Clashing Through the Snow,” a holiday road-trip comedy in the Planes, Trains and Automobiles vein. Christopher Briney (the lead in The Summer I Turned Pretty), Lukas Gage, and Julia Fox are co-starring.
France filmed a video to give his fans context around the new look, so they wouldn’t freak out:
I know it’s very weird to see myself with dark hair. It’s for a job. It’s for a role. I wasn’t gonna tell you. I wasn’t gonna share this at all. But I’ve been out twice over the last couple of days and people are very confused.
This is not a midlife crisis. I hate dark hair on me. I love my silver hair. I love my grays. I’m not ashamed of them whatsoever. I’m really proud of my grays.
This is just for work. We’re gonna go right back, hopefully to my natural color within the next month or two.
Rahul Kohli, the British actor from iZombie and Midnight Mass, said the dark hair makes him look like James Bond. Gigi Hadid called it a “parallel universe” vibe. His Queer Eye castmate Antoni Porowski commented “My brain is glitching so hard rn.” Tan replied: “I know, Ant. Mine has been for days now.”
