Chelsea vs Man City Preview: Guardiola Eyes FA Cup Glory as Blues Seek to Salvage Season

Wembley Stadium is the venue as Chelsea and Manchester City go head-to-head in the 2025/26 FA Cup final on May 15.

For the Blues, this is a chance to avoid a trophyless season and soften the blow of another dreadful Premier League campaign, given that they’re on the verge of finishing outside the top five.

For the Cityzens, it’s an opportunity to win their first domestic cup double since the 2018/19 season after beating Arsenal in March’s League Cup showpiece at this stadium.

As the FA Cup final draws closer, fans are exploring different ways to stay entertained beyond the pitch, especially with the growing popularity of online gaming platforms. Many supporters also take time to try Vegas slots online, adding another layer of action to matchday anticipation. This trend reflects how matchdays have evolved into a broader entertainment experience for football audiences worldwide.

Both sides had to go to great lengths to live up to their favourite tags in their respective semi-finals and book tickets to Wembley, where Pep Guardiola’s men lost their last two FA Cup finals.

Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal in a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds United, handing the interim Chelsea boss, Calum McFarlane, a dream touchline debut.

Whether this will be the Argentine’s last final in the Blues shirt remains to be seen, with his agent, Javier Pastore, defending his client’s recent off-field behaviour during his latest interview with AS.

Meanwhile, Man City fought back from a goal down to overcome second-tier Southampton, with Jeremy Doku and Nico Gonzalez netting beyond the 80th minute to propel the Premier League title hopefuls into their 15th FA Cup final.

Chelsea’s road to Wembley

Chelsea kicked off their FA Cup journey with a landslide 5-1 win at Charlton Athletic before trouncing Championship side Hull City 4-0 in the following round.

Though they had to survive a dramatic extra time against Wrexham, the Blues clinched a 4-2 win at the Racecourse Ground, following up on that triumph with a 7-0 rout of third-tier Port Vale.

Fernandez’s first-half winner against Leeds in the semis helped the Stamford Bridge giants reach their first FA Cup final since 2022, with McFarlane looking to become the first caretaker manager since 2012 to win the trophy.

Indeed, Roberto Di Mateo achieved this feat during his interim spell at Chelsea, guiding the Blues to FA Cup glory before capping the campaign with Champions League success.

Manchester City’s road to Wembley

The opening few rounds were plain sailing for Man City, as they hammered lower-league Exeter City 10-1 to get their FA Cup campaign underway before easing past Salford City 2-0.

Despite facing fellow top-flight rivals Newcastle United in the round of 16, Guardiola’s side secured another statement win, beating the Magpies 3-1 at St James’ Park.

City’s best performance came in the quarter-finals as they put bitter rivals Liverpool to the sword at the Etihad Stadium, cruising to a dominant 4-0 victory to set up a ‘David vs Goliath’ semi-final tie against Southampton.

A late Wembley comeback served to propel City into their fourth consecutive FA Cup final appearance, with the Cityzens looking to avoid matching Chelsea’s unwanted run of three straight losses between 2020 and 2022.

Prediction

Guardiola confirmed that Man City could soon welcome Rodri and Ruben Dias back from injury in the build-up to Monday’s league clash against Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Their return would hand the Cityzens a major boost at Wembley, as they prepare to face Chelsea in the FA Cup title-decider for the first time, looking to extend their formidable run against this opposition.

City strolled to a 3-0 league triumph at the Bridge in April and are now unbeaten in all 13 competitive meetings between the sides since the 2021 Champions League final.

Remarkably, only three of those 13 matches ended in a draw, with Man City winning the other ten to underscore their dominance in this fixture in recent years.

Another victory would see the Etihad outfit draw level with Chelsea on eight FA Cup titles, and given the recent history of this match-up, it’s hard not to back Guardiola’s side to conquer this competition for the first time since 2023.
