Teddy Sheringham believes that the Tottenham hierarchy has made one mistake after another over the past 12 months.
At the start of the season, no one in their wildest dreams would have thought that Tottenham Hotspur would be two points adrift of safety with four league games left to go.
However, that is the current reality for the Lilywhites, who are into their third different head coach this season.
Pundits are struggling to see how Spurs can avoid relegation, given the players they are missing due to injuries, and a Tottenham legend believes that the issues go back to what happened nearly a year ago.
Teddy Sheringham believes Tottenham made a big mistake sacking Ange Postecoglou
Sheringham believes that Spurs’ problems go back to their decision to sack Ange Postecoglou last summer after he had delivered the club’s first trophy in 17 years.
The former Tottenham striker admits that he would have loved to see what the Australian could have accomplished after being given a full season.
Sheringham said (via The Standard): “Ange Postecoglou must still be sitting at home thinking, ‘how did I lose my Tottenham job?’ I mean, he told everyone he was going to win something in two years, and he did. They (Tottenham) haven’t won something for a long, long time so when he’s won the club a trophy, he’s somehow lost his job. Why is he still not in charge?
“I understand the league position last season wasn’t great, but he put all his eggs in one basket to win something, because he wanted to win something. We all want to win something. I’m still mystified on that decision to replace him to this day. I know it was very 50-50 between the fans about whether he should stay or go even though he won a trophy. But I think some of the football that Spurs played was just phenomenal at times.
“Some of the games I saw they could have been six up in the first 10 minutes, by the way they peppered teams and got behind them. It was just unbelievable, unbelievable edge-of-the-seat football from the first kickoff, and that’s what you want as a punter, to be entertained. It would be very interesting to see where we would be if he had stayed, that’s for sure. I’m not saying that Spurs should go back to him, not now anyway, but we’ll never know.”
Sheringham calls for accountability after the ‘ridiculous’ Igor Tudor decision
The 60-year-old understands why Tottenham turned to Thomas Frank last summer, but termed the decision to replace the Dane with Igor Tudor as ‘absurd’ and ‘ridiculous’.
He suggested that those at the top who have made these calls need to face the fire when the dust settles this summer.
Sherringham added: “Well, everyone thought Thomas Frank was such a good appointment in the first place, but that turned very sour very quickly. I think the jury was still out for me with Thomas Frank.
“He did well at Brentford but there’s a big difference between managing Brentford and Tottenham. I could tell the jury was still out, but a lot of Tottenham fans were quite happy with him coming in. The whole situation obviously proved too difficult, and the way the team played in the last two or three games of his tenure was so bad that something had to be done.
“Then, for Igor Tudor to come in, who doesn’t know anything about the Premier League, was just so such an absurd appointment that it just couldn’t work. I don’t know who sanctioned the move, but it was just ridiculous. Overall, for me, it’s a combination of things. It’s the people above the management, and after that, you need to take into account of what’s happened. It’s absurd what’s been going on at the football club over the last 18 months.”
