Mullah Baradar meets UK special envoy in Kabul
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar claimed Afghanistan’s economy has improved in recent years during talks with a UK envoy, despite ongoing humanitarian challenges nationwide.
Senior Afghan official Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar met with the United Kingdom’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Richard Lindsay, in Kabul to discuss coordination, economic cooperation, and continued humanitarian assistance. The meeting highlighted ongoing engagement between Taliban authorities and international partners.
Baradar claimed the country’s economic situation has improved compared to the past and pointed to expanding economic ties with regional and neighboring countries. He described recent developments as signs of gradual recovery despite ongoing challenges.
However, Afghanistan continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations estimating that around 17 million people rely on life-saving assistance. Economic pressures, food insecurity, and limited access to services remain widespread across the country.
Since the political transition in 2021, unemployment has risen and international aid flows have fluctuated, contributing to economic strain. While some regional trade has increased, many households continue to struggle with declining incomes and limited opportunities.
Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly emphasized the need for continued funding and access to vulnerable communities, warning that reductions in aid could worsen conditions. International donors remain cautious but engaged in providing essential support.
The UK envoy expressed condolences to families affected by recent violence linked to cross-border tensions with Pakistan and reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to continue humanitarian assistance.
