‘We missed this last step’ – Mauricio Pochettino opens up on Tottenham past and Premier League return
Mauricio Pochettino has once again reflected on his time at Tottenham Hotspur, offering insight into the club’s past highs and what it takes to push Spurs to the next level.
Many Tottenham Hotspur fans would give anything to see their club performing at the levels they did a few years ago under former boss Mauricio Pochettino.
There is no denying that those five full seasons under the Argentine – when he had Tottenham competing for top-four finishes, challenging for a title, and even reaching a Champions League final – represent one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
However, things have only slowly gone downhill since his departure, with Spurs now in the bottom three and at risk of losing their Premier League status for the first time in their history.
Mauricio Pochettino reflects on his Tottenham journey
There is no denying that Pochettino has a deep affection for Spurs, with the Argentine often speaking about a return to deliver the silverware that eluded him during his time in north London.
However, that could now be tricky, as Spurs’ latest appointment, Roberto De Zerbi, has signed a five-year contract and, unless something drastic happens, he could well see it out.
That has not changed Pochettino’s feelings towards Tottenham, though, as he reflected on his experience managing the club during an appearance on The Overlap, explaining what Spurs meant to him during that period.
He said: “I really love Tottenham; it’s one of the most important parts of my life as a coach and in my personal life too. I can talk from my experience in Tottenham and what I can tell you for me it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I think when we were competing there, we were competing with big people.”
Pochettino discusses Spurs next step and Premier League return
The former Spurs boss also discussed what Tottenham needed to reach the next level. He explained the challenges around investment and decision-making, outlining why the club fell short at a crucial stage.
He continued: “All was true we had money to spend, yes, but not the type of money to improve or to be close to win or challenge with. We missed this last step. I wanted to tell them if we wanted to be competitive, we need some time to make different decisions.”
After spells at Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea, Pochettino then opened up on a potential return to the Premier League.
He spoke about his connection to English football and why it suits him, making it clear he sees himself back in the division one day.
He added: “One day, yes because I really like England. I think my human profile and coach profile match very well with the Premier League and with the culture, the idea, the idiosyncrasy, and the philosophy.”
